Hi
I'm new to the forum and newish to dslr photography, although i have browsed the forum before out of interest. I recently bought a d40x which is driving me mad because of the dust! Took it to LCE today for a 30 quid clean (thought it was the sensor) and it has now come back with hairs and dust in the viewfinder. The guy at the shop tried to blow it out but couldn't saying it would have to be sent away (at further cost) although the dust was def not on the vf when i took it in. Any suggestions?Tnks

Hi Pooboo,
Welcome to TPF

I have moved your thread to 'talkphotography' as more people are likely to see your thread here.

Havent experienced anything like this myself but hopefully someone will come along with some ideas shortly. :)

Imho, it sounds like during the cleaning process at LCE, these hairs and dust have been blown onto your focusing screen. If the images you shoot don't show any evidence of the dust you can see through the viewfinder, this is quite likely to be the case afaik.

The focusing screen can be removed, *very carefully* blown clean and replaced, *extra, extra carefully,* but if you're not 100% confident I'd get a pro to do it.

Good luck getting it sorted.:)

Thanks, the guy said it wouldn't show up in the photos but i have yet to take some and see - he said it would just be a distraction and it certainly is that! Think i'll get it done again as am bit of a chicken when it comes to the "innards" of my camera!

Phone the manage of the store and explain what happend, be polite etc., and I'm sure he will help you out, as you have said, it is their fault the crap is now there. If it has to be sent away it then should be at their cost not yours.

Sounds like it could just be on the mirror ? ...

Re the mirror, have checked that thanks and it's clean. So frustrating!
Thanks

However annoying the dust and hairs are, if they're visible in the viewfinder, they wont be visible in your shots. They are most likely to be on the focusing screen, and whilst it is possible to clean it yourself, unless you're the patient, careful type who's good at this sort of stuff and doesn't have 5 thumbs on each hand, I'd either just ignore it, or if it bugs you that much, pay to get it cleaned.

:agree:

Those of us that have been using slr cameras for a while don't even notice the dust on the focusing screen anymore - well within reason anyway. It is just something that happens. It can be cleaned but it will never stay spotless. As said it will have no effect on the pictures - just your view of the scene on that glass screen.

Seriously, I used to use old film Nikons provided for work and the viewfinders were a mess of hair and dust, but no-one bothered about it at all.

Wait till you get a bug crawling round in the viewfinder - now that really drives you daft. :D

Ok, I'll believe you! Can see i have a lot to learn/put up with!
