What are people guesses on this? I'm going to be buying a D300 at the end of this month, but don't want to get it to find out the D400 is coming out in a few weeks.

I can only just afford a D300 so if the price was much more on the 400 it would be out of the question anyway.

Your thoughts?

Prices of just-launched cameras are always close to RRP rather than discount to fleece those gadget freaks with more money than sense.

I've no idea if the D400 is due soon - how long is the traditional Nikon release cycle for this model?

If it's going to be announced on the 14th then expect it to start appearing in the shops at the end of October

Hi,

I was in the same boat for a D200/D300.

Saved all my cash for a D200 waited for ages, then asked Nikon Sales/Customer reps when the D300 was due, they told me that there was nothing in the pipeline... a month later the D300 came out and i was really pi**ed at them. Needless to say i kept my D200 for about 6 months after that and then traded it in for a far superior D300... low light is a lot better on the D300...

As for the D400 ???? depends really on your needs but the usual is that the prices will be way higher for a while anyway.

Kind Regards

Markymark

Don't think they'll be a massive step up in terms of features from the D400, HD Video, more MP etc.

Can't wait to Oct, so i'll get the D300 I think :)

Sounds about right, I think the quickest stock to appear after release was the 35mm DX lens? Everything else takes a right age.

Apparently it's an entry level model being released this month.

Certainly looks like there's a low end model being released soon, works out timing wise.

I'd expect a D400 to be announced some time between now and August. That's quite vague, isn't it? I should be a fortune teller.

Awww man - I love my D300 but I know when that D400 comes out its going to be full of "features" I've always wanted - I just never knew about :bonk:

Although tbh, if it drives the price of the D300 down much I think I'll just buy another one to use as a second body. At the moment I think the D300 is pretty much perfect for me, unless the D400 has some amazing things going for it (faster all points AF, huge buffer for aviation shooting) I'm not going to be that bothered about upgrading.

No, because the rrp of the D700 is now £2199

Ah well......that is out of the equation now.............

Edit...still knocking about a 17-18 hundred.

Depends on how much of my money the lovely Taxman decides to give me back that I leant him last year, interest free of course.......:bang:

Of course, it may be that the D300 won't get replaced at all, as Nikon drive the prosumer end of the market towards FF....

You reckon Flashy?........Hmmmmm....could be some cheapish 300`s knocking about if that is the case, but would also mean the death of a lot of DX lenses as the crop bodies get sidelined. In fact, I cannot see Nikon doing that at all.........:suspect:

Not everyone wants to move to FF - Action shooters of all guises (motor, ball, aviation etc) have greatly benefited from the extra reach given by crop bodies

I don't mean that they would discontinue the D300 and leave a huge gap between the D90 and D700, rather that they would just leave things as they were for the moment and phase the prosumer cropped cameras out over the next year or so

Personally i would go for full frame, and hopefully will in a few months, i was hoping about May time, but now it's looking more like July and that will be my last camera for a good few years, hang on didn't i say that with the D300 :D , then my D300 will be up for sale, i agree with flash and i also think in a few years we will be mostly full frame, i've never seen the argument about having extra reach on a cropped lens, surely if you have a 300mm lens on a cropped or full frame body it stays a 300mm lens, on full frame you would just crop in photoshop, now i've started something

With the inflated state of the 2nd hand market at them moment I wouldn't hold your breath for 'knock-down price' D300's. :)

I wouldn't bother speculating on the 'D400' until something is officially announced by Nikon.

Yeah, but, mebbe,I think.........the 700 and 300 have very similar pixel count on the sensor,so a cropped 700 pic would not contain as much detail as an uncropped 300 pic, using the same lens of course.......

Okay, I might be able to stretch to a D700 as I was planning on getting some fast glass too with the D300.

Okay, if I went full frame, I know I would have to sell my 10-20, but could I keep my 50-150 Sigma? I really don't want to get rid of it as I love it.

DX vs FX. I made a nubie comment about 'extra length on DX' in a thread and was shot down by cowasaki and puddleduck.

quote from cowasaki

It doesn't actually give you extra length. That is exactly like getting a pair of glasses painting the lenses black but leaving a small hole in the middle and calling them zoom glasses!

You are not actually getting any more zoom you are just looking at the middle of the picture blown up. Just like loading a picture into photoshop and sliding the magnify bar.

I was put in my place that day, hopefuly in a friendly way:shrug:

 That's very funny and true I'm afraid, no harm's meant by it.

Been crunching the numbers, I would have to sell all the glass I have now to get a D700, and then would only be able to afford a 50mm 1.4, I couldn't go back to that.

Yep, I would have to sell two lenses to get the 700,two lenses that I rather like.Difficult decision to make...........:bang:

Have been looking at an upgrade for next year D700/300. My plan will be to get CC with 12months interest free on purchasers and pay monthly. If the prices settles at a sensible level thats about £85/£150 per month.

Maybe ok for you mate, but I don`t do credit ,called me old fashioned I suppose.........:D

Pffft - sell them! You'll get a new camera and make some TPer's very happy! (Not to mention what a great time it is financially to sell lenses)

£150/month? That's a car payment, not a camera body one :cuckoo:

Whatever happened to saving up until you had enough to buy something outright?

Its a bloody mortgage to us old codgers............

thats one hell of a monthly outlay

plus the fact once you've got the goods you never seem so keen make another "X amount" of payments , thats me any way !

Nope. Car payments £280 over 5 years. No point in saving at the minute with poor interest rates. My solution suites me.;)

If it were my money, I'd wait until the D400 is released and the price on the D300 starts to drop and then buy one of those.

Unless that is the D400 has some killer feature that you just can't live without ;)

If so,£16800 total, depreciation on a 5 year old car,that is a spanking.............

Its a Honda Civic . It was new 2 years ago, if people were scared of depreciation no body would buy a new car. All cars depreciate but my Honda hold its value alot better than most.
