All being well in a few weeks time i will have enough funds to buy my first DSLR camera..

..I have my eyes set of a Nikon D40 as i've read so much good about them. I know they lack a few features such as self cleaning sensors and built in focus motor, but after looking on Ken Rockwell's site he loves his and it seems like a
great little camera.

I know people say you should go to a camera shop and try it out, see how it feels and i understand why and all, i was just after other people's opinions on this camera and maybe some other contenders? I ideally want a Nikon, and my budget is probably around £250 so i'll be going second hand.

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Rob, if you do want a D40 you'll need to be quick, it's been discontinued and they're getting thin on the ground ;)

:O

Right then! Better start washing my parents cars more often ;)

IIRC it has been replaced by the D60?

I'll probably get one second hand and i've seen on ebay there are quite a few around still... should be okay but thanks for the tip

Nice choice. I was looking at the d60 today but
In the end I chose the Sony a300 becauseit seemed like a good camera for
a first timer. It's on offer in jessops this week for £300

I think the D60 is on it's way out too, I believe there were deals to be had last week at £259 for the body and 18-55 lens, which is only £15 more than the D40 kit was going for

Sony A200 c/w kit 18-70mm is ~£260 delivered from the likes of Amazon.
10.2Mp sensor (same as in the D60)
sensor cleaning (you'll still want to buy a rocket blower though)
in-body image stabilisation
better AF system (9 point instead of 3)
supports both in-lens & screw drive focus lenses
wireless flash
vertical grip available (can't remember if there is 1 for the Nikon)

or £299 for the A300 kit from Jessops - gain fast AF LiveView but at the cost of a worse optical finder

I thought that when i bought mine today. The nikon viewfinder was better but there was still more about the sony to sway me to buy that. One of the things was obviously the price, £300 and the nikon d60 was £359 but had less features, also, i wasnt keen on the 3 point af as it seems a bit old schoold from what ive read. Saying that, i was very very close to buying the nikon.
