Sorry if this is a silly question but when changing the shutter speed on the D40 what does 1" mean, 20" mean etc? 1 second? 10 seconds?

Thanks in advance.

Hmmmm...cheers, was trying a shot in a lightened room before and was just getting a black photo with a 10 second shutter speed. Is this right? Never done night photos before and im trying to figure what settings I need before braving the cold.

Depends .... did you take the lens cap off? ;)

On a serious note - no, that's not right.

Have you tried putting the aperture to f8 or wider ?

With a shutter speed of ten seconds, you should see BRIGHT things - albeit very blurred if you're not using a tripod.

Anth

If you see a " symbol after the number, that means seconds. So 5" is a 5 second shutterspeed.

If you see a number with nothing after it, add a "1/" in front of it. Eg 500 means 1/500 of a second shutterspeed.

edit: A good benchmark is somewhere around 15" sec, f/10 and iso 200. You can alter the settings depending on what you need upon reviewing it on the LCD. This is for a nightshot, by the way.

Right, got it now, just had a quick mess and I think I must have had it on the wrong shutter speed before. I will get a grip of this camera eventually.

Hey Crayzygeordiegirl,

I had the same with my D40 when I first started using it, I had the aperture at F22, when I sorted it I fell in love!!! great camera, wouldn't be without mine!!!!

:) I love mine too, took some outdoor shots during the day, just need some night time shots too!

I love mine too.

This thread has some good sites to learn about how the various settings change the outcome of the photo.
