Hi

having recently bought a nikon d40, it came with the standard lens kit.

I am slowly learning how to use it etc.

I would like to purchase some new lens for it, but i am stumped on which ones to get.

I would like a telephoto one for close up picture on distance. What lens would i go for the d40?

Also reading the forums the 50mm looks good, which ones would suit my camera as well.

If someone could kindly direct me in the right way on what to look for in getting new lenses, what i need to look for to be comaptible with my camera.

Cost, well i am hoping my partner will buy one for me for xmas and i will buy the other. So any either side of the spectrum on price will be fine.

many thanks

Sounds like the Nikon 55-200 VR might be a good solution.

Its a really nice lens, very cheap, with optical performance much better than the plasticy build and the price tag would suggest. About £130.

The Nikkor 50mm is a solid choice, but it won't autofocus on your D40. Its compatible though, so if you are OK manually focusung for £80 it's a good option.

For autofocus options, you could hold out for the new Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AF-S but that'll be about £280 and you don't mention a budget..

Also consider the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 which I personally would choose over a 50mm on a DX camera.. about £240 - £280.

Thanks for the information. I haven't expressed a budget as such as i am going to give my partner a list for Xmas. As i spend a fortune on her at xmas, i 'm sure she will do the same to me. Or least i'm hoping to

I have a D40x and the first zoom I bought was the Nikon 55-200mm VR lens. This is a perfect match for this camera and it became a permanent part of my camera kit.

agree with above and the 50mm 1.8 wont auto focus but it is easy to learn it.

will take you half an hout tops to suss it out.

I agree 55-200 but DO NOT spend mega bucks on lenses till you know for sure what you want.
After a while and with some more experience you will know the lenses you desire.
And if you've already spent the dosh...........well ..:bang:

I'm not planning to spend mega bucks. Not till I get the hang of the camera and its many uses
