D4 or D750?

I'm looking to upgrade one of my D700s, primarily so I can get better lowlight performance (mainly concerts, the occasional wedding).

For glass I have a Nikon 24-70 f2.8 + Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR.

My initial thought was a D750, but have been recommended to consider a D4.
I think by the time I've bought a D750 + grip + additional battery, a used D4 would come in at a similar-ish price.

I don't really shoot video, I'm not too worried about the weight (am used to a gripped D700).

So if you were in this position, which body would you be tempted by, new D750 or used D4? :)

No real difference in noise performance although if you down sample the D750 files to the D4 resolution you may find the D750 a bit cleaner.

I think the layout of the D4 is more similar to the D700 than the D750 is so you may feel more at home with the D4, and the D4 has a better fps. But the D750 has better DR (if that's important, certainly helps in the shadow recovery), better crop ability and the not to be underestimated flippy screen.

Personally I'd just choose which I was most comfortable with.

…that is a nice feature indeed!

The only point I would like to bring up is
the flawlessly solid construction of a single
digit body.

Thanks guys, unfortunately I don't think I'm going to be in the position where I can get my hands on each to try them out... I'll keep reading up!

I think the two bodies are different in this department altogether, the D4 is much more solidly built. Not that the D750 feels cheap of course ;)

Hi Ben

I have 2x D750's and a D4. I'll be honest with you. My D4 is the least used camera.

The reason is that firstly it's bulkier & heavier. I'd put up with that but frankly I prefer the IQ from the D750. The SOOC images are just more pleasing on the eye. The tones are slightly different on the D4. Plus with having 2xD750 means the colours are more consistent across a set than if I had a mix of D4/D750 photos.

In terms of low light performance I'd say the D750 has it by a hair. Not much in it in fairness. The shutter on the D750 is also quieter. The LCD is also better on the D750.

The only times I prefer the D4 over the D750 is when I know I will be shooting a lot of frames quickly. So typically at a wedding that's confetti and recessional.

The D4 is better built for sure but the D750 isn't exactly made of tissue paper.

thanks @gadgeteer! that is a superly helpful reply! there's something about owning a D4 which feels better, however with the D750 being newer technology, etc. it feels like a better investment.

I'd go for a D4 if it gave noticeable better high ISO performance (3200+ range), but it sounds like they're both fairly well matched.
So the D750 sounds a little more flexible (lighter + grip could be removed for more casual shooting) so is probably edging it at the moment!

p.s. love the images on your website!

D4 must have the noisiest shutter of any camera I have ever used! :)

Have you ever tried the D700??? When I was using my D700 in church, the shutter slap was embarrassingly noisy! To the point where I'd hope a passing aircraft/motorbike may drown it out.

Yeah I know what you mean, it does feel rock solid in your hand. But the D750 beats it in pretty much every respect except for fps and buffer. I can't get more than 19 RAW's in the buffer on the D750 even though I'm using 12bit compressed RAW's but on the D4 it's more like 50 which in reality is more as XQD shifts data way faster.

Oh yeah that's the other thing too. You need to factor in the cost of XQD cards and a reader if you want to get the D4.

How do you carry the camera? IMO, it is a rather bad idea to use a sling strap (i.e. black rapid) attached to a removable battery grip.

I've used a double black rapid on two gripped D700s for years and never had a problem :)

And I've had the play between the grip and body cause all sorts of electrical shorts/weird behaviors and eventually battery grip death. Luckily the camera wasn't damaged... Admittedly, that was using a BR type strap attached to a third party plastic grip.
The OEM magnesium grips (Nikon) also have play in them. And I have also carried it with a strap attached to the grip w/o issue... but I'm not counting on it staying that way.

I think the lesson here is more about buying Nikon quality... I had a third party bundled grip with a D90 way back when, and that would constantly be cutting out so I know what to look out for.

2x D700s + grips + black rapid double have never given me one moment of doubt and would be confident it will stay that way :)
