I'm switching over to Nikon and mainly shoot sports but also quite a lot of travel and landscapes. I'm trying to work out if it would be best to get a D4 or a used D3s and a D800. The D3s/D800 combo works out not much more expensive and gives more flexibility, back and would mean when I travel I could take the D800 rather than lugging the D3s. On the other hand the D4 does it all in one package and the few hundred saved could go towards lenses.

What would you do?

PS - I am aware the D800 and the D3s/D4 are very different beasts. ;)

I'm not blown away by the reports/images of the D4 and comparisons with the D3S, whereas some of the D800 images have been quite impressive. For the extra ££££ the D4 just doesn't seem to offer the kind of improvements I would pay for and I don't like its card combos.
I'm definitely keeping my new D3S and will consider a D800 in time ... D4S might be worth a look in the future to see what Nikon do as a re-think.

I've just upgraded from a D3s to a D4, and if it were me starting from scratch I'd probably go for the D3s/D800 combo.

Don't get me wrong the D4 is an amazing camera, better than the D3s in every way (high ISO is pretty much the same, yes, but you get lower base ISO and more pixels) there is no question...but for someone starting from new I just can't help but think the smart money would be on the D3s and D800 combo.

If I had the option, I would personally go for the D3s/D800 combo.

The D4 is obviously a fantastic camera, but the D3s is still a stunning bit of kit, and perfect for sports photography. Plus I personally think if you do landscapes and travel then a D800 is going to really shine. And as you've said, it's nice to have a smaller body rather than lugging a full pro body about when you're on the move.

Can I ask what's inspired the move to Nikon? I'm just curious, but it's nice to see a move to a proper camera brand.... ;)

Sport......D3s
Weddings/Portraits D700/D800/D800E

The D4 is a cracking camera and I would have had one, but do to ageing wrist's it would be to heavy as was my D3s, so I'v gone D800 (when it get's here) :-)
