With a D4 and a D3s, a 400 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8, which camera would you put on which lens to cover a football match and why? I have my own thoughts but would appreciate yours. Cheers all.

Suppose technically the camera with the better AF should have the 70-200 on for box / goal / cele shots.

Although there is very little between the D3s and the D4. I'd stick the 400mm on the D3s and the 70-200 on the D4.

Stuart McFarlane (Arsenal photographer) uses D3s' for both of his bodies and so there really isn't an issue with either combination.

Be interested to hear your thought process once you have enough feedback.

On the other hand, if you are going to be cropping more with shots on the 400mm, might it be better on the D4 with a few more pixel per duck or should I diver if you're photographing Ashley Young?

Those with a 400 would be more able to comment on this as they would know how much they have to crop on both 400 & 70-200.

I would put the d4 on the 400 too, for better cropping. In rugby, my 400 gets used 95% of the time.
Currently for me 400, on d3s, 70-200 on d3

Please don't mention that massive cheat! I was at the Manure game (in the ever awesome away section of course!). AY needs his legs breaking.

Thanks for your thoughts. I too was looking at the ratio of shots from both lenses and going to go with the 400. I am looking forward to pairing the two up when the D4 arrives.

80-90% of my shots are with the 400mm so thats where the D4 would go.

Yup, but that's RL Gary, where the best shots seem to be those taken on a long.

In footy the money shots at the moment are Goal & Celies, which are going to be taken on a short lens.

Yup there's an argument that the real money is in getting decent shots of bust ups and tiffs (like Tober's shot) or decent manager's reactions, but those don't quite need the focus speed that the above shots do. :)
