So I’ve been searching on the old internet for a good 45 minutes and I’m yet to find a comprehensive answer to which speedlights/external flashes will fit my Nikon d3500. Some websites say certain ones will, and other websites say they won’t. Some say they will but with reduced functions. I (maybe wrongly) assumed Nikon flashes would fit Nikon cameras...rookie error it seems. So any advice without pretentiousness would be appreciated.

What’s a good one?
Is there any budget ones that are good?
Would a Nikon SB-600 work on my camera? What should I be looking for?

TIA.

Are you wanting a Nikon flashgun or a third party one, there are plenty of third party guns that will work with your camera. I have an Essdi gun that works great with my camera, it also comes with a trigger for off camera flash which you will need if you want to use the flashgun anywhere but on the camera itself.

An SB -600 should be fine for your camera.
A very good alternative would be a Yongnou YN560 III.
I have several of these manual flashguns.
Are you looking for a manual one or TTL

Both

One of the things I like about godox is that's its a big system with not only speedlights but also studio flash, big battery powered strobes and small but very powerful speedlight sized strobes that all can be controlled from the same trigger. And you can control godox speedlights compatible with other camera makes from your Nikon so in a camera club you can make a multiple godox speedlight setup from the members camera bags and you can all use it

GODOX as well, worked perfectly with my D3400 and now have the fuji version for my XT3.

Look around amazon. You can often get the X1T-N trigger and the 685-N flash for £130 which saves £10 or so over separately purchasing them.

You need the ones with N for Nikon by the way the last letter denotes the brand of camera they will work directly with S for Sony C for Canon F for fuji etc.
