Anyone know if there are any rumours as to when the D300s is to be replaced?

Reason I ask is because I really want to sell my D300 for a D300s but would be gutted to spend the extra money on the D300s to then see it get replaced.

Cheers

No idea, but a direct replacement won't be soon with the D7000.

In many ways the D7000 is superior to the D300S, though some may not consider it a direct replacement.

Ah thats good to hear then.

I've seen the D7000 shots and its a small camera and I have hands the size of a dinner plate so a gripped D300 is perfect for me.

Some point in the first half of 2011, maybe March/April, would be my guess. The D300s is just a stopgap model, I'd expect the headline features from the D7000 to appear in the D400, or whatever Nikon choose to call the D300s replacement.

Cheers Flash.

I've just done a little lookup on the D7000 and the only worthwhile improvement over the D300s is the megapixel count.

I might go look at one though if it's alot cheaper than the D300s.

I would say the realisation by Nikon that their previous implementation of video was crap is a big improvement.

I wouldn't buy a D300s for video. Even with the D7000 it remains to be seen if Nikon have the right strategy and understood where the market is going- should have signed a JV with Sony;)

Having said that, it depends what you intend to do but it is limited.

if you look around online you can get a D300s cheaper than the D7000 !!! have found a D300s for £979 body only and £1499 for body and AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR Lens

so think that is what i will be going for end of the month!

would you give me a link to that price? Cheapest I can find is £1100.

I only want body only as i'd just sell that lens straight on.

I doubt that very much. We're still awaiting the replacement of the D700 and until we see it on the shelves any replacement for the D300s will be a long way off.

I'm not so sure, the D300s is, to all intents and purposes a 3 year old camera now.

not really - the sensors new to the model (shard only with the d7000?) and the AF still smokes the models below it.

I can't see ti being replaced next year, they'll want more mileage from the sensor and the d700 and d3s will be replaced first

Indeed. The D700 is the oldest camera at the top of the Nikon range and given the release of the Canon 5D Mark II one depserately needing an upgrade with video.

Are you sure about that?

Nikon Press Release

Built upon the widely acclaimed D300, the D300S incorporates the same DX-format 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor

Yeah, I thought the D300 and D300s were the same bar card slots and video.

Interesting. The D300s is now £999 so cheaper than the D7000, yet it outperforms the D7000 in all areas apart from no. of MP and video (about which I dont care).

The only review I have managed to find concluded that it was indeed between the D90 and D7000 but the reviewer (an american pro) had reservations about the image quality, his view was that the images lacked the sharpness of other Nikons. I do wonder whether the 16.2mp is just too much for a crop sensor (and views on the similar spec Canon D7 also seem to vary)

Found the review again, just one guys view......

I will be waiting for some decent in depth reviews before deciding whether to part with my money fora D7000, meantime the D300s at £999 is looking very appealing.

These are the main things the D300s has over and above that of the D300.

1.D300s shoots HD movies at 720p resolution, 24 FPS with stereo audio. Maximum length is 5 minutes for 720p and 20 mins for lower video resolutions.

2.D300s is slightly faster than the D300, shooting 7 FPS in Ch mode (Nikon D300 is 6 FPS). With MB-D10 battery pack, it will shoot 8 FPS.

3.A new release mode “Q” (quiet shutter-release) is added to the dial right after Ch (continuous high speed).

4.Dual card slots – the Nikon D300s features dual card slots to work with both CompactFlash and SD (SDHC-compliant) cards. Either card can be used as the primary card. Secondary card can be used for overflow or backup storage, or for separate storage of NEF (RAW) and JPEG images and images can be copied between cards.

5.Active D-Lighting now has “Auto” and “Extra High” added. “Auto” is something expected, as both D700 and D90 have this mode. The “Extra High” is something new though.

6.Nikon D300s is slightly heavier than the D300, adding 15 more grams of weight, weighing total 840g total.

7.Nikon D300s has a dedicated “Lv” (LiveView) and “Info” buttons on the back of the camera.

8.Nikon D300s has a virtual horizon now (D300 did not).

The D7000 will drop in price once it's been on the market for a few weeks

Hellooo:)

Well if its any help i just brought a D300s over getting a D7000..... this was becuase every professional i spoke to told me the 300s has a much better build and its built to work as workhorse camera, whilst the 7000 is more aimed at keen ameuturs so i guess it depends what you are wanting it for....

ps sorry my spelling is terrible! :coat:

cheers

ah but the d300 has a better locking memory card door, also some people say the d300s has faster af speed but i found them to be the same.

what nikon need to do is bring out a new d300 with the d7000 sensor and tune it like pentax have with there k5(same sensor as d7000 but iso is way better) now that would be smoking.

No, all they need to do is bring out a D800, then reduce the RRP of the D700 to £999.

If you do the most recent firmware upgrade on the D300 then the AF is the same

Quick update, D300s on warehouse express has just seen the price drop by no short margin!
so in theory as the trends would suggest, there is a replacement on the cards!

I would also suggest it is just a stock clear out after new year but just the D300s price plummeting?

Dont think so!

February 9th press conference aswell!

aaaahhh - so excited. I get to buy a d300s - as the 2nd hand prices should drop niceeeely!!!

There is no evidence from past upgrades that the price of the older model drops, in fact it increases as all the suppliers with the lower priced ones sell out, the only ones left in stock are the suppliers who had them at a higher price, that is if they actually have them in stock at all, or just source them once an order is received.

The D3 price did not plummet when the D3s came out.

sound great and i would buy one but its not a crop camera which i want for wildlife.

I thought that, but since getting my D700 my opinion is changing, the full frame images from the D700 are cleaner, and have a greater dynamic range, the slight additional cropping does not appear to be an issue.

However I am still testing this, but the better focusing of the D700 certainly makes it the one for in flight shots.

yes it does.

And the D5000 has the same one too! :P

....And put it in a decent body, a'la D2/3 series - now a gripped DX body would be the nuts and I hazard a guess that with myself and AWP wanting one, it'll make it into production, such is the might of our wisdom :D
