D300s or D700

I'd have taken some side by side samples but I just sold my D3! Don't have any side by side shots because I only use the D300 in good light.

I'll have a look later when home and see if I can find any shots from both taken in semi same lighting conditions :)

fare point.;)

I'm in a similar situation, with a D40 and after getting some very handy dosh from Getty images, I'm heading towards at D7000. Having seen some high ISO shots from it they look very good. I could afford a D700 with new glass, but I know I'd be less likely to carry the D700 around with it's weight.

Please god dont buy a D700...

If you take images like that with a "lowly" D40, I can only imagine what you'd do with a D700!! :'(

I think I have made my mind up. I am going to get the D7000 (what I have seen of it so far is impressive), and use the money I would save on the D700 to buy some new lenses (11-16mm, mmmmmmmmmmm). The financing of a complement of FF lenses, along with the loss of having such a light camera have swayed it tbh.

And someone I did Jury Service with gave me some good advice.

I just couldn't justify the cost etc of a D700, with the lenses and what not, and it just seemed like such a change considering I only class myself as an enthusiastic amateur.

This was my conclusion when faced with this question earlier this year. I was shooting birds and butterflies for fun. For a pro,,, things are different. I could have just about afforded the D700 body, but where do i go from there,,,, second mortgage time. In the end i settled for the D300s, which is a semi-pro camera. The D7000 has a decent spec, and is aimed at the enthusiastic amateur, specifically the niche between the D90 and the D300.

Interesting discussion here. I jumped from a D90 to a D300S to a D700. Got all three bodies but I love the D700 to bits.

I had a toss up between the d300s and d90 - have to sell one but have decided to keep the D90 over the D300S, simply cos it suits my needs from a smaller backup unit. Put the same lens and lighting on, its identical in quality.

This is exactly what I did, and for exactly the same reasons. D90 -> D300s ->D700, kept the D90. The D90 keeps one of the main benefits (for me) of DX - small size, light weight - where the D300s is as near to the D700 as makes no difference in terms of size & weight.

Oh and so if anyone is after a D300s im selling mine in the sales section! :D

I am in the process of going fom a D300 to a D700 . I loved my D300 but the pics I have seen from the D700 + 24 - 70 AF-S F2.8 always blew me away and the FX thing has always been knawing away at me. Just sourced a 24-70 and can't decide whether get a D700 nowor wait until the replacement comes out next spring. The D7000 does look interesting though.

Good god, that is amazing quality for the D7000! I'm alreadythinking how much I could do with that sort of noise..and I thought my D5k was amazing....
