Hi all, hope you can help me out, in a bit of a pickle.

Dusted this camera off after a couple of years in the cupboard and took it to Whitby a month or so ago, no issues using Sigma 30mm 1.4 and Nikon 18-200mm. Worked like new.

Got it out again couple of days ago as off to Cyprus, and using with Nikon 50mm 1.8 and Tamron 90mm 2.8 it started showing f7 with triangle next to it, and autofocus does not work at all. It randomly began to work a few times after opening the shutter repeatedly or leaving for a while. Didn't have time to take it anywhere check up.

Couple of hours before leaving tried it again and all seemed fine so decided to bring to Cyprus. I'm here now though and back to f7 with triangle (which I understand is due to lack of communication with the lens, telling me it's 7 stops from biggest aperture) and no autofocus. Cleaned the contacts as best I can with microfibre cloth but no luck.

WEIRDLY, the issue doesn't seem to come up when using Tokina 12-24mm. Could it be something to do with the other lenses being full frame and the Tokina being DX? Note I've never had an issue using them before though... could I have messed a setting up?

Picture below with the 50mm attached.

Help appreciated.

I notice is a AFD lens. What aperture you have that little switch lock to? Reason why I ask is I use to have a AFD tamron 19-35 and it stop working all for a sudden with a ERR message. Then I realise the switch got flipped and lock to a different aperture.

Locked to 22 with is only one it can lock to. Unlocked, spun and re-locked the aperture numerous times, never made a difference.

It's basically just recognising them as non-CPU lens

maybe need to clean lens and camera contacts ?

Tried both, only have a cloth though. Searching online a lot of people rave about Deoxit, when I'm back in UK I'll see if I can source that.

Nice name btw

Manufacture. The lead of the pencil is a mix of finely ground graphite and clay powders. Before the two substances are mixed, they are separately cleaned of foreign matter and dried in a manner that creates large square cakes.
So a lead pencil over the contacts may clean them up

A rubber on the end of a pencil can work well. Just make sure you orientate the camera upside down so that the debris falls away from it.

Pencil didn't work, not tried the rubber yet (yet to locate one). Honestly I think it's something more.

After I left it for a couple of hours, it worked with the 50mm 1.8 for a couple shots, then back to not recognising it. Still works fine with the Tokina though. Might be time for a service (or maybe an update [emoji23])

Make sure the lens is sat correctly and perhaps just try turning it a millimetre or so. The exact same thing happens sometimes when I use my extension tubes :)

That worked at first on the tamron 90mm, but not everytime. There just isn't any play on the Nikon 50mm or Tokina though.

Also, the symptoms have shown a couple of times in the Tokina lens now, but that seems to right itself before long.

Gonna try and find some electrical contact cleaner here for a temp fix (maybe), and then in for repair when back home. Not sure how cost effective that will be though .

try some friends nikon lens's see if they work?

Just an update, got some contact cleaner (Kontakt 60), which seems to have done the job (so far). Only issue is despite being very careful, a tiny bit got on the mirror foam cushion, and seems to have killed its adhesive bond, so gonna get a new one of those when I get back! Ugh [emoji58]
