Hi guys,

I've bought myself a (used) D300s, which I am in the process of learning.
All seems to be well except the buttons above the command dial on the LHS that control ISO, WB and Quality. These don't seem to work no matter what shooting mode I have the camera set on. Also, is that dial holding those buttons supposed to rotate?

I can't find anything online or in the manual other than they are just supposed to work. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks.

They should just work no matter what as far as I know (assuming it's the same as my D700, which I think it is).

The dial is supposed to rotate to select between drive modes but only when you push down the little button in front of it.

have you tried turning either front or back dial while holding the ISO/WB/Quality button down?

If it's the same as my D200, you hold one of the buttons down, then turn the wheel at the back left of the camera body. I use it all the time to change my ISO setting.

The dial with the buttons on doesn't rotate, but the dial underneath does. You have to hold down the small button at the 10 o'clock position near the dial. I've yet to learn what those settings do though so I haven't played with them yet.

The settings are

Single shot release
Continuous release sLow
Continuous release High
Live View (you won't have this on the D200)
Time release (time set in menus)
Mirror Up (to reduce mirror slap on long exposures)

The dial that sets the drive modes works fine, but the buttons above don't seem to do anything at all, regardless of whether I am turning the control wheel on the right hand side. Seems a bit odd and wonder if it's actually broken.

Just checked on my D300, hold any one of the 3 buttons (WB, ISO, QUAL) and turn the back control wheel on the RH side, if this is not working then it looks like you have a broken camera

Oh b*llox.

Thanks Rich for clearing that up, will have to look into getting it fixed I guess.

Where did you buy the camera from, would probably be worth returning it for a full refund as the repair might cost a fair bit

Try a factory setting reset first. Probably a long shot but with the controls being so customisable, maybe something odd has been set.

How do I do that? I've looked at the bottom by the serial number and there is a recess but no reset button as on other camers.

It came from eBay, with buyer protection, so I'll see how I get on with that.

Thanks guys for the help so far.

Is there a way to reset it by holding down QUAL and +/- (well at least on the D300 you can (both buttons highlighted with a green dot on the camera body)

EDIT: You need to hold them for more than 2 seconds

Custom settings menu:

Second item down, 'reset custom setting'. This won't reset everything but it will reset all settings relating to controls.

Have you tried holding the ISO/WB or Qual button down and turning the front command wheel, rather than the rear?

Didn't work either Graham.

:( Not looking good unfortunately but on the plus side, given all three aren't working, the chances are that it will be a simple problem to fix, most likely a loose cable connection inside.

Do you have the option of a refund?

That's what I'm hoping Graham and am looking into that. Also waiting for a communcation regarding the refund too.

Yes, tried all of that.

Hold the w/b button down and rotate the rear dial with your right thumb and you should see it change symbols on the top lcd

I couldn't do that John, none of the buttons were working as posted.

Turns out the control module was damaged, but I have arranged for it to be fixed and the seller has looked after me.
