I have recently been given a couple of AF lenses including a 50mm. They won't autofocus on my D3000 so was thinking of selling it and have been looking at a few D200s (they seem to be going for similar prices).

Would you advise for or against me doing this ?

you will find the d200 better built and works with all nikon lenses if you can live with tech that is 6-7 yrs old then go for it

What would I loose going for a D200 ?

i have never used a d3000 so not sure but im sure someone will be around soon to tell you

perhaps check on the specs of both cameras and weigh up which features of the d3000 you cant live with and see if they are on the d200 ....perhaps if you can stretch to it a d300 may not be such a large drop in tech ??

I went from a d3000 to a d90 which was a great upgrade and has a motor in the body.

Still got my D200,I like it that much.

I have both the D300 and d200 still, I sold my D80 as it just felt to small and also to menu driven compared to the d200 and d300, the d200 stil produces great images and can produce good images at higher iso if you nail the exposure.

A bit too much money for me i'm afraid. Looks like a nice camera though.

I'd prbably say worth going for the D200, or maybe a D80 depending on what your looking for, not sure how much they are going for at the moment though.

They are so far apart in terms of what they can do, you can barely compare them.

It's like comparing a brand new ford with a 7 year old ferarri.

Get the D200. No contest.

I have downsized to a D3000 purely because I was fed up with bulk so small and light became my main priority. if it wasnt I would still have my 40d which is pretty much Canons equiv to the D200 so if you can accommodate the extra size and weight it may be your best option..

just FYI you do know the D3000 AF confirms in viewfinder don't you? turn the focus ring until you see a little dot bottom left corner and voila.

Cheers for that. Guess I will have to stump up for a D200 or use AF-S lenses

Cheers for the heads up. Negotiations may follow.

Ended up buying a D90. Well impressed so far. Thanks for all the help and advice folks.

I am happy with my D200. Built like a tank, as somebody said, is an accurate description.
Mine is even bulkier because I have the battery pack attached to it. Which was necessary, because I have large hands.
