Hi. I have never used the combination of the D300 + SB800, . But would like to start getting the hang of using the SB800 off camera. I seem to remeber there are settings that have to match,
I don't seem to be able to find anything in the manuals.

Can some one please give me the basic instruction to get the SB800 to work with the D300 off camera, whilst at the same time so the built in flash does not fire.
 
You can't set the D300 so that the onboard flash won't fire, it's needed to trigger the off-camera flash. If you go into the menu and set the onboard flash to Commander and then set the output to "--" however it will fire at a low enough power where it won't contribute to the overall exposure but can still trigger your SB800.

Hi Graham, Thanks for the reply.

Made changes as,
menu,,,, Braketing/flash,,,,, *e3 flash cntrl for built in flash,,,, down to Commander mode, Built in flash --,,,, channel 3, .... SB800 set to channel 3.

Opened the on board flash and fired, but the SB800 still don't fire...

I don't have the SB800 but with the SB700 you have to set the flash up as Remote.

What settings do you have on the flash and what group is the flash allocated to?

also, try putting your hand slightly in front of the pop-up flash in order to minimize contamination from it. Your remotes may still fire even though you've blocked the popup a little.
