D300 Owners Thread - Anything related to the D300!

Well I have just the group of D300 owners. Just brought a second hand one off ebay local to me. Need to pay for it and pick it up first once the seller gets back to me. But it seems good so far only 7500 actuations. Now i need to find a good guide on how to use it and also some decent lenses to benefit most from it.

Ideas please for landscape work and something with a bit more reach. My initial thoughts are Nikon 16-85 and a Nikon 70-300.

Also what speed cars are good the faster the better i presume?

Think we were bidding on the same one. Enjoy! I'm still hoping to grab one of the ones that are finishing later this week.

There is a few on there most seem to be good condition ones with low shutter counts too.

Recently using my D300 and i have lost the 57 point focus displayed on the screen.

Does anyone know how to get this back?

Example image of what i mean below when you focus on a subject.

The setting "display active focus point" is somewhere there... can't remember where in the menu but look in the manual...

My D300 arrived in the post this morning. First impression, it's huge! I'm coming from a D5000 which all of a sudden feels very toy like. I'd played with a D300S before but always in isolation. In context next to the D5000, this thing is a proper sized camera and feels like it is built to survive a nuclear assault.

I've only had 5 minutes to play so far but it is very apparent that there is very little of the control system that is common to the D5000 other than the menu. Its going to take a while to get to grips with everything. It took me a couple of minutes just to open the memory card slot! I think I will buy a third party user guide to help things along.

The viewfinder and back screen are fantastic. The viewfinder in particular is so much brighter and larger.

I'm sure I will have a vast number of questions to ask about this but just for starters, would I be right in assuming that my IR remote (ML-L3) won't work with the D300? I have a wired timer on order so it's not a big issue if the wireless one doesn't work.

Anyone recommend a good third party guide worth reading? I am still quite lost after upgrading from my D3000!
Love the camera though the few pics I have taken so far look amazing compared to what my D3000 could take.

I brought the D300 Digital Field Guide J. Dennis Thomas very good read and explained every button menu bell and whistle you can find on it :)

And no the remote trigger wont work, youll need a cabled one unless there's an adaptor you can plug in?

Another question now that I've had a chance to play. On the image above all of the focus points are shown at once. No matter what setting I seem to select, mine only seems to show one focus point at once. Is that right?

I'm looking to buy a D300 at some point to replace my little Olympus, I want to know how good the low light AF is though?

The AF i would say is very very good in low light - with the right glass of course.

I'd also add that this isn't the same as high ISO performance which these days is somewhere slightly below average. If you want high ISO then a D700 or D3 is your best choice.

Just in case you start looking for the extra 6 focus points, there are only 51 focus points. ;)

Also it's a bit naughty posting someone else's images. ;)

Anybody able to say whether i should be able to see all focus points at once?

I've just had a look at mine and with the switch on the back in the bottom position, Single Point AF, one focus point shows.

In the middle position, Dynamic Area AF, the camera starts with one focus point, but if Continuous Focus is set on the front, may use other focus points if the subject under the focus point moves.

The top third position, Auto Area AF, this mode uses as many focus points as it needs, but you may never see all the focus points on, and indeed there are no focus points showing until you focus. The image that was posted above just show where the focus points are I think.

Hope that helps. :)

Much appreciated. Makes sense. Was just slightly confused as the D5000 and D90 I've used permanently showed the available points. I guess with 51, the viewfinder would start to look pretty cluttered if they were all visible at once.

Howdy good folks,

Just thought I'd pop in and see if anyone is awake :D

I've just bought a used D300 from a fellow TPer and wanted to let you know I'll be back with questions so pay attention ;)

Good man. Finally starting to get to grips with mine and finding it superb.

My top tip: It's worth spending some time (well actually quite a lot of time) setting up your custom shooting modes and menu options. It's one of the best things about the camera in my opinion.

Okay, said I'd be back ... hope you've been paying attention :)

I started reading through the thread from the beginning (didn't get past Page 3) and was interested in the discussion about the AF-ON button, which caused me to try it out on my camera. I've hit a snag ... I can't reach the button when I'm holding the camera in portrait orientation with the MB-D10 grip fitted. Anyone found a way to oversome this? can I remap the AE button on the grip to do the AF-ON function?

TIA :)

Yes you can. I can't remember off the top of my head hours to do it though.

Cheers Dave, I'll see what I can find in the manuals :-)

Yeah - I think its on the menus, focus... Find the AF one and there should be a button assigned, reassign it.... Or if I got that wrong, then its under the menu part of assigning buttons, you find the button that you want and reassign what it does from a list.

Good luck :)

Menu item A10

So, I've sold my Olympus lenses.

About £600 to spend on the body, I really want a D300.

Bidding on one at the moment on eBay, immaculate, 13,000 actuations.

However, there's one on Dale Photographic, is £600 too much for 29k on the shutter?

£600 is a decent price from a dealer with some kind of warranty, 29k isn't that much really. I paid £500 for one with about 6k on here though

if you dont mind me asking why the d300 over an e3.

Well, I had a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 - and I love(d) it. Sold it to some one on here, I would have kept it if the E-510 had AF micro adjust... E-3 doesn't have this either, only the newer Oly bodies do, but the E-5 is still too £££ and the other bodies are a bit small. E-30 is affordable but rare as hen's teeth to find.

D300 seemed like a nice move onwards from the E-510. With the sigma and my macro lens gone, I have no lenses that tie me in to a system, and I'm not really a brand-whore, so was an open market.

I love the E-3 and it's an insanely good machine, built like a tank and performance that defies the smaller sensor, and the E-5 builds on this even more. The D300 just made sense though.

OK, so I got myself a D300s. :D

I use mainly my Sigma 150-500mm which I'm going to purchase a Manfrotto 393.

Once in a while I use a Sigma 10-20mm for landscapes and night time shooting.
Currently I have a Redsnapper tripod and 3 way head, but the QR plate left marks on the bottom of the camera off the second tightening screw

http://www.redsnapperuk.com/camera-accessories/RSH-528_3_Head.html

So what I'm after is a new (cheaper the better) ball head for the few times that I use the D300s with the 10-20.

Any of you lads have any ideas?

Cheers Lee

I can recommend one of these but I wouldn't necessarily call it cheap. It works well for me though.

Cheers Graham, it was something along those lines that I was after. Reading the reviews someone uses it with the 150-500 as well. Not sure I'd risk it with that lot on.

Now to stop the urge of going up the toon to buy one right now and wait for some other recommendations. :D

Being honest it's the only one I've used so no idea how it compares in the grand scheme of things. I do use it with my Sigma 180mm macro lens and that is a big heavy lump so I'd be suprised if it struggles with the 150-500. Assume you use a lens collar?

Yes mate I use a lens collar.

Just checked weights of lenses.

Sigma 180mm - 965g
Sigma 150-500mm - 1910g

 Quite a big difference then!

You'd be welcome to try mine if you aren't in a hurry.
