D300 or D700?

Yes, it will work with either one or two En-EL3s or 8 AAs. If you buy the gear though it will work with a Niknon En-EL4 whihc is the type used in a D3.
 
The MB-10 will take AA's or a normal D300/700 battery yes, or a D3 battery.
 
You can also set the battery order, so that the camera uses the batteries in the grip first, leaving the EN-EL3e in the camera for "emergency" use
 
Since you're after a motorsport camera, I would suggest the D300 over the D700.

2 reasons but related.

The D300 will give you the extra 1.5x pulling power compared to the D700.

The D300 will give you 12.3MP worth of Dx pixels while the D700 in crop mode gives you less than half that at the same (Dx) crop.

It does quite work like that though. The revolving power of the sensor isn't just about pixel numbers. AP's recent head to head of the 5D and the D300 when the crop factor is taken into consideration it seemed to indicate that the resolving power was pretty much the same. The D700's far better high ISO performace would give it the edge over the D300.
 
For some applications I would agree but for motorsport, where the action takes place almost invariably outside and in daylight, I would argue that the extra pixels are more useful that the extra available ISO would be. Should the OP be covering the Singapore GP or 24 hour events, maybe the D3 would be a better choice than either - especially given the cost of a D700 with all the trimmings.

In both your and my cases, I would go for the D700 - you for its available darkness capabilities as well as (my main reason for wanting one) the wide angle aspects.
 
Thank you for all your valuable comments everyone. Whilst a D3 would be nice I'd much prefer to put that money towards glass so I will be going for the D700. Even though my original post stated I shoot motorsport... this isn't the only thing I shoot :p After playing with the 14-24 f/2.8 in the store today I'm pretty smitten with the lens with the D700. For now I'll be getting the 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 with the D700 :D

The only thing you're missing over not getting the D3 is the 9fps, the focusing and image are identical so you won't really be at a disadvantage for motorsport anyway.

Enjoy the 700 :)
