Hi everyone, im posting this thread looking for some advice as i have a problem with my new camera. I have only owned it for 3 weeks and the slot where the memory card inserts is faulty. It looks like the pins inside the camera are bent! I only found this out last night when i took the card out (carefully as i always do) and when i put it back in it wouldnt fit! my husband had a look and he said a pin or two looks bent! i phoned jessops this morning and they asked me to bring it back, with the card which i did and they are saying i have caused the pins to bend! short of crying as i have a shoot tomorrow morning and 3 more before end of october i dont know what to do! i explained to him that ive had cameras for years and this couldnt possibly happen! i didnt put pressure on the card inserting it blah blah! im soooo soooo upset as i spent £1600 with them in august and my camera now wont work! they have offered to send it to Nikon to fix but could take up to 6 weeks!
:'(

First of all Jessops dont have the right to blame you. Further investigation would be needed to find out why and how it could have happened. Is it a new camera from Jessops? If so im sure you will be covered by a warranty however you may need to re-schedule your appointments if you can until the repair has been completed.

he said it would be classed as accidental damage rather than a fault because it did work up until now. my question to him was "my personal opinion is the pins would have to be weak to cause this to happen, without force"!! ive to go back tomorrow to see a manager! im so angry and upset, i also do not want a camera that is new, faulty already and repairs so soon!

Check all of your CF cards before using them again as bent pins can cause / be-caused by CF damage.

Give the citizens advice bureau a call first (should a local one to you).

If it's brand new from jessops, see if they have a replacement camera they can get for you (emphasize your camera/photo shoot commitments). Or worst case that they can loan you. I think it it is weak pins that is manufacturing fault so they should replace for you.

Post up what happens though. We'd be interested in what happens.

funny you mention this as i had a close look at the card last night and again today and it looks like two of the holes are not individual.....i.e. almost together as one!! this is what i think has been the problem maybe or certainly a weakness within the camera card slot!

have you still got you,re D70? you could use that till you get you,re D300 back. oh and six weeks sounds a bit excessive, i wouldnt have thought it would take that long.

I would be astonished if it is weak pins in the camera, it is probably a faulty CF card,if so, I don`t think Jessops can be blamed (Sorry to upset the Jessops bashers..;).........) nor Nikon.

Is it covered on your house insurance?

daven - fortunately when i bought the camera i was offered 3 years insurance for the price of 1 year which i signed up to....thought it was a good deal and so glad i did now. my worry is that i have been given an ex demo camera as the jessops guy said all there shops usually only have a stock off 1 nr d300 and its normally the one they sell. i asked what he could do to help and he said the manager "may" out of goodwill give me a new one but its unlikely. the manager is in tomorrow and he was the guy who put together my whole order and dealt with me directly when i was making a large purchase. im keeping fingers crossed! i have my old d70 to use tomorrow but im just gutted and pi**ed off that this has happened.

i mentioned to him about my commitments and asked how he would feel but he was a team leader and didnt care really! i told him i would never shop there again! (i was headspinning at this point when i was blamed for it!)
il keep you posted for sure.

if this is the case re CF faulty card then i have no leg to stand on?

Bin it and dont use it again as this could damage a working camera..

dinorock - i do still have it so il be using it tomorrow for the shoot. nikon have to assess the slot then order parts and fit. he did say he would ask for a priority repair, but that was only when i started getting tearful! i dont think he could deal with that! lol
ive had a look at my d70 card slot and its fine, ive had to use my cf card in it to get my images off it from yest and it fits like a glove!!!

Out of interest what brand of card did the damage? Is it a well known brand or a cheaper import?

one last question guys/girls. is this a common problem or do you think its rare!? the guy in jessops said he hadnt seen it before and he has a d300

I suppose, if this is the case, that you may have a case with card manufacturer, assuming it is a real one not a fake. That is no slur on you at all,but there are a lot of fake cards about.

dos,nt sound like a card problem then, did you try to put the card in the wrong way round not being silly but, if you did and gave it a little push before you realised it could have damaged you,re pins. ive done it once but spotted it just before pushing the card home .

Never happened to any of my cameras nor heard of it happening, hence my questions regarding the card itself.

When I've seen this before (in a IT environment) is usually the CF card reader that damages the card , the card then damages the kit its being plugged into - have you checked your card reader for misaligned pins ?

you cant put the card in the wrong way, it doesnt insert unless its the correct way round.

yip, bizarre! i have tried to put a completely different card into the new camera and it doesnt fit so the pins are bent....you can see it if you look closely with a light! im baffled as to why its worked up until now. thank goodness i wasnt shooting say a wedding and this happened! off course i would have had a back-up. but im quite shaken by this experience!

Geezer - its a scandick Extreme III. compact flashcard 8GB. £70 bought from jessops when i purchased the camera!!

No need for exclamation marks, I wasn`t aware that you bought the card from Jessops and i`m only trying to be helpful. Perhaps the camera is at fault afterall.

Just to add, I have just tried and you cannot put a card in a D300 the wrong way, which kinda rules out operator error.

sorry fracster, the exclamation marks were for the quality of card and how much i paid for it then:thumbs: this happening....not at your comments. your being very helpful!

Likewise, sometimes the spoken word transmits intention so much better than written words, crossed wires and I do hope you get it sorted ASAP...:)

the card has two holes that are perforated into almost one....this looks not normal obviously. the camera is reading the card as damaged. but the card works in another camera but no other cards work in the d300. i dont know if the card was like this when i bought it, and it has worked up until now!

under sell of good act you do not have to prove any fault with in 6mths ask for a new camera

i asked for a new one as i wasnt prepared to digest his thoughts i.e. manual handling! i told him i hadnt heard of this before and i would have concerns over the camera rather than the user (unless i was a complete newbie maybe)! he said he would get sacked for giving me a new one! they didnt have any in except display (again, surprise surprise)! i did say that under no circumstances would i accept a display aftre this happening and was prepared to travel to collect a new one.

take both the card and the camera back ,and tell them to sort it out thats a lot of you,re hard earned cash they took off of you so, it would be nice if they helped you out;)

thanks.....nothing other than being thankful to you all. im a distressed lassie today! lol

Aye, understandably so.

Seeing as you bought all the stuff from Jessops, perhaps you should quite forcefully ask them to either replace the camera or at least lend you one until yours is mended, just a thought......

Dinorock - thanks it was my redundancy money, i got paid off last month!!

Oh b****r, sorry to hear that. It happened to me last year,it isn`t always a bad thing, it may be a good break for you and other things may happen for you.

Best of luck.......

PS.......I blew my redundancy money on camera equipment as well..............
