D300 Flash help

I loaned my camera to a relative to have a try of as he is considering buying a D300, when I had the camera back and went to use it last night the flash (SB600) was firing about 2-3 times before releasing the shutter, I have looked in the menu's but I cannot find what may be causing this, any suggestions please.

Red eye setting on the camera. It's one of the flash modes.
 
press and hold pop-up flash button, and use rear dial to cycle through the options.
You can see the settings in the upper right corner on the top lcd.
