D300 battery life

Just out of interest, how many shots are D300 users getting out of their EN-EL3e batteries? I'm not using a grip and yesterday shot 712 RAW files with a reasonable level of image viewing/deletion (232 shots binned) and using VR. The batteries down to one bar.

I've heard that the new firmware upgrade is to solve some issues where the battery shows depeted before it should, but I'm suspecting my usage as described above should be about right. If so, I'll need to get another battery before Edinburgh as I can easy shoot 1500 shots in a day there.
 
I would say that's about what I get from an EL3e too. Certainly a lot more than I used to get out of a D80.

The dead battery syndrome shows a depleted battery indicator in the viewfinder when a battery is fully charged. Happened to me a couple of times, but hopefully all gone with the new firmware. Many people have never experienced it.
 
No sutre tbh. But I can confirm that with the grip and a ENEL4a battery, the battery life can be measured in weeks. And thats no exaggeration. :D
 
Hmmm, thanks all. Looks like a spare battery is a must, which is a bit of a pain if I plan to upgrade to a grip in the near future but I can't risk running out of juice.
 
My D80 would last 1000 plus deleted images.

I'd say my D300 isn't far off but I have three batteries altogether; no grip, though.
 
Thanks all for your replies. With my D70s I could shoot 1000+ so I'm interested to see just how many to expect with the D300. Another battery isn't going to break the bank and could be worth its weight in gold. Ideally I'd get a grip and EN-EL4 but that's a bit of a stretch at the moment.
 
i would rather buy 5 batteries before the grip....

But thats partly beacuse i cant get on with grips, i think they are great in portrait, but a pain in landscape, and most of my work is landscape.

Ah, most of my work is in portrait so a grip would suit me down to the ground. It's just the cost of the grip, the additional batteries and the charger that's the issue.
 
can you only put the en-el4 in the grip, or will it take the en-el3a or AA batteries too?
 
You can use 3a's but you don't get the most out of the fps, and they don't last as long as the 4's. I could keep them as spares back home, but I wouldn't want to have to lug chargers around with me too.
 
If you want to borrow an EN-EL3e for a couple of weeks you can have mine as I just use the 4's now.
