I won't repeat the long thread in suppliers info but I have just tried to purchase a D300 from Dixons Tax Free to be told they cannot sell me one (even though they have stock) as they were advised by Head Office not to sell any from December 2008.

Sounded like a pile of poo to me so just spent 20 mins on phone to cust services of Dixons who spoke to HQ and advised me that Dixons have removed the D300 from sale as it is a discontinued model!!!!!!!

Thought sounded like rubbish too but on checking normal Dixons online it appears there is no D300 available to buy anymore just the grip.

I expect this is just Dixons going ga-ga but if not do they know something we all don't :( At any rate it means my new D300 dream has now gone out the window as I am blowed if I will spend over £1k for one :'(

Maybe contact Nikon to see if and when it is going to be discontinued?

I'll have a look in Heathrow Dixons when I'm there on Wednesday to see if they're available or not.

Just called Nikon - they were surprised to hear of this 'story'. The person on the phone did intimate that the model line-up may change in the near future with "a lot of focus currently being applied to a similar model to the D700". :suspect:

That'll be the 24MP D700 model then.

Not heard of this yet, is it rumors or gospel :), just seems surprising with the release of the D3X.......i doubt the D300 will be discontinued anytime soon.

I'll eat my hat if we see a "D700x" before a "D400".

The D300 isn't discontinued.

Just checked the Dixons web site, No sign of the D300 on there. I suspect it's been discontinued from their stocking list, not discontinued by Nikon

PMA could see both. There's no doubt there's a 'D700x' on the way.

There's no doubt there's a "D400" on the way.

We are going to see (at least) one more DX camera to go with the new 35/1.8 DX I think.

I have'nt heard anything about a "D700x" from the usual chap I hear (or see if I'm lucky;) ) things from. Doesn't mean there isn't one though...but it would surprise me if D3X testers didn't get a D700x as well. I think its about 6 months too soon.

Mind you Nick - this is probably a message that you should get a D700 instead!!

Have you phoned Nikon?

Sounds like nonsense to me, otherwise it's £999 at Jessops.

No not called Nikon as TBH I was a bit peeved having spent the best part of an hour ordering/cancelling/phoning Dixons HO to be told that I can't have it now  They will have the D300 on display in Heathrow T5 and T4 as both stores told me it is on display but they are not 'allowed' to sell it  Having said before I didn't believe the story but having now spoken to the HO guy at Dixons it appears they are telling the truth that Dixons HO have said the D300 cannot be sold (which seems daft as they could easily shift their current stock?) because as far as they are concerned this is now a discontinued model (don't forget this is Dixons talking here not Nikon!)

LOL! I actually thought this when the words "well how much is the D700" came out of my mouth during the discussion with the manager of the T5 store  I swiftly came to my senses though when he said £1478

they could just be cutting their lines as they could be uncompetitive against rivals and online businesses.
also Dixons has a stake in PIXMANIA iirc.
they might think that the Canon mid range lines are better for general shoppers.
this is the middle of a credit crunch don't forget; it affects a lot of things
weird that they're not allowed to sell it though

See if he'll give you a discount for you being mucked about! :bonk:

I did think about asking, but even with 10% off I suspect my wife would still have used parts of my anatomy for new earings

Since when have shops not sold discontinued lines? If anything they'd be far more keen to offload them before the valua plummets. Sounds verr verr fishy to me.

Indeed, you'd have thought they's willingly sell a relatively expensive item in these times.

Although the cynic in me thinks that they may be holding off to see if the price rise on 01 March can be reflected by bumping the price up a bit. :suspect:

That just doesn't make any sense economically, you don't want to keep stock when you can sell it.

I sold a d300 from curry's maybe last week, it was £979 at the time. Does seem odd, maybe it is different for the tax-free stores though.

I wouldn't pay much attention to camera shop staff - I was in local one just after the D300 was launched and the salesman advised me that he couldn't get me one as they had been discontinued and replaced with the 350D .......

I don't disagree at all. I do wonder about the DX 35mm being launched now if a D400 is coming in 2 weeks. Who knows.

I guess much will depend on the pricing of it anyway. Let's hope it's not £3k more than the D700!

The D400 price will have already factored in the Yen-£ value.

I think we'll see a cashback offer for the D300 to get it back down to around £900.

This will allow the D400 to come in around the usual £1299 price point.

I think once we start seeing the Cashback offers for the D300, the D400 will come shortly after.

It can't get too close to the D700 price, or too close to the D300 price I think. However given the D3X price, maybe Nikon will go mental and price it at D700 levels (or more?!)

I know that! I just can't understand why they've got stock in the shop but have been told not to sell it. :)

I'm going to ask in there on Wednesday morning.

No worries Nick. :)

EDIT: The boss has put the dampeners on a D700. :( Apparently my flexible friend needs to be double-jointed. Either that or the lucky numbers come up soon.
