sigma 70-200 with 1.4 tc. This I use an awful lot as my walk about set up.

Thanks for those Martyn  some thinking to do i think the 200-400 could be perfect especially for a planned trip to Norway for the Sea Eagles. When you went for the 500 did you look at the 600 too?

Sorry op for taking this a bit off thread

Yes ... too heavy :D ... the 500 + D300 + gimbal + Gitzo 3531 is close to 7kg I walk miles with it so the extra weight of the 600 + beefier tripod would be just too much.

Andy yes with both, etc

OP please excuse another jump in, Martyn thanks for taking the time and effort to post that, I've been playing with what to buy next, a D3s body or the 200-400 as I can't do both this year. I think now it will be the 200-400.

Now the next problem, do I get the new VRII...

Just out of curiosity, what lens sits on your machine most of the time?

Tamron 18 -270mm VR DiII on the D300 and Tamron 18-200mm on the Canon T2i.
Rokinon 85mm F/1.4 manual everything on the old D70.

For baby photo sessions it's the 50mm afs f/1.4 95% of the time. For personal use 50mm again if shooting my son, 70-200 vr if I am out and can us that length with the tamron 28-75 in 3rd.

Only difference is Nano coating and the newer VR unit, MTF graphs are close to identical from what I have read, a decent used one will be below £4000, the new one will be around £1000 - £1500 more at a guess.

18-200 these days, it normally just gets used for snaps now since the other D3 appeared

Glass before bodies every time! get the 200-400, it's my most used lens by far. I don't think the price difference between the new and old versions is that much these days so your decision I guess, I've never had any quality issues with the VI so I'd be loathe to get the newer one if it meant saving a few hundred quid

read thr'o them all and as I thought I am as yet the only one.
My ex 35mm 30year old 35-70 2.8 Nikkor
When I go to trackdays my also old 80-200 2.8 ed Nikkor
These two lenses satisfy my needs, I look at the cost to match their performance in modern glass and forget it.
I am looking for something wider but just can't decide what to buy.

120-300 Sigma with a 1.4 TC..............

Awesome set up for what I do generally.

A sigma 24-60 f2.8EX on the D300(also works well with the D3) with a 18-50mm f2.8EX on the D200.
Hardly ever use the 70-200 F2.8EX as my handheld hit rate is quite low, I'm after a Sigma 50-150 to replace it if I can only find one at good money and without any focussing issues!

Nikons "beast" 28-70mm f2.8......

Nikkor 24-70 2.8,Nikkor 18-200 VR and just recently Sigma 10-20 4-5.6.
Depends on what I am shooting.
