Ok need a bit of advice or persuasion, I'm looking for a used or new body to replace my nikon D2xs which sadly died, now 80% of my photography is bmx racing so its pretty fast action and i've been looking at 2 options first one is a used Nikon D3 and second is a new D800 so I'm struggling on which one to get and possibly looking for you guys to make my mind up for me

:help:

D800 has limited frame rate, will 4fps be enough for your fast photography?
On the other hand the AF is said to be better ... will that help?
Can you cope with the 'what if' on getting one that doesn't need to go back to Nikon for AF adjustment ... or the higher pixel count being unforgiving on your ability?
For many the D800 is seen to be more of a studio/landscape camera - will it work for you?
If you were asking D3 or D4 it might be easier but I'm not sure that a D800 would work out best for you ... D3S maybe?

Buy the D3s on here in the for sale ads. Worth every penny. You won't have any upgrades/changes to do in the future then.

i've just made the same jump & you'll be amazed at the speed of the D3

it will handle just like your D2X & all the controls are pretty much in exactly the same place. after using a full sized Pro body for a while anything else just feels wrong :gag:
massive viewfinder, bigger & better screen, more fps, faster better AF, dual CF card slots, MUCH better high ISO performance & greater dynamic range etc...

i better stop as its making me wanna buy another one :naughty:

oh, just a quickie. are you the SE BMXER that goes on Rad?
if you are... Hello again, been a while :)

D3 or D3s same size body as your old camera and you can use the old battery's and charger from the D2X. :)

well it seems everyone is in favour of the D3, there's a nice one on MPB photographic that looks tempting and will leave me enough money for a 50mm

Probably the D3 but I've never used the D800. What's the battery life like on the D800 without the grip - could this be a point to consider? The D800 with it's resolution could allow for some awesome shots though: I'm thinking dirt flying about and all in crystal clear detail hopefully?

You can get a used D3s for roughly the same/slightly more than a new D800. I have the D800 and in a way, wish I'd gone for a used D3s. But overall, I'm more than happy with the D800.

If you do have DX lenses, one advantage of the D800 is that it has a 15MP DX mode that has a faster frame rate (5fps) than FX mode (4fps) and in DX mode, it can be increased to 6fps with a grip. The grip does not increase the FX mode fps rate. I'm waiting on a 3rd party grip that cost 70 quid.

Because the AF acquisition and tracking is so good on the D800, rat-tat-tat high fps isn't so important for action shots.

If theres dirt flying about the d3 probably has better sealing., and a much higher frame rate.

True but the only way youll get to be able to do those hi res shots is in 4fps fx mode, maybe 5. If thats enough then go for it. Its not as fast as motorcross and you wont have fountains of mud flying off in your direction so it may be fast enough for you.

Battery life is pretty good. Ive done 5 hour studio shoots on one and it didnt dent it too much. keeping a spare is par for the course anyway.
