I recently lost an opportunity to buy a D3 on TP recently,:( so I scurried off to eBay to see what was available.

I came across this item http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nikon-D3-SLR-...ryZ57215QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I became a bit suspicious when with only a few hours to go the bids are upt o £220. I emailed the seller as requested as follows:-

"I am contacting you as requested in your eBay listing. I am a serious buyer and would welcome from you the following information.

1 How old is the camera and are you the original owner.
2 Where was it purchased and can you provide a receipt.
3 Did you use it yourself.
4 How many shutter actuations has it carried out (if you don't know then if you send me an image taken recently then I can tell from that).
5 Why are you selling it.
6 Any marks or scratches and general condition.
Any other information you think is useful.
I look forward to hearing from you as soon as convenient.
Kind regards
Geoff Bickers"

He replied shortly afterwards as follows:-

Hello,
The price for it is 1200 USD with all included in the price : shipping , insurance and delivery to your home .
The advertisement is only informative so customers can contact me and place their orders.I don`t have time to put auctions for each customer and also i can`t use different methods for each because if i do this it would be a total mess for me.
I get them directly from the factory brand new sealed in the box with warranty and all the accessories from the manufacturer at the special price only for dealers without any taxes or fees so i am interested in long time term business with dealers which i can supply every month, week or day but there is no problem for me to sell to individuals too hoping that they will recommend me to their friends so they may bring me more customers.
Please let me know if you have more questions ?
Thank you!

He lost me there  I have sent further email as follows but NO response so far

"So what you are saying is this is a brand new unused Nikon D3 Body Only in a sealed box with all standard accessories and I can buy it direct from you for $1200 US Dollars (approx £740 Pounds sterling). If I placed my order now when would it be available please?
Also is there a manufacturers warranty issued with it that is accepted by Nikon Europe, and can I collect from you personally."

It appears that he has a good record on eBay although most of his stuff is low price unrelated products.
Im no eBayer so would welcome views on this, even though I might jeopardise my position.

While I can't see anywhere, anything that says it would come back and bite you in the bum, I would still steer clear of it.

A brand new, sealed, fully warranty'd D3 at £750 doesn't exist. It just doesn't.

+1 to Foodpoison, run a mile, I wouldn't touch that even if it was the best price ever. Just looks far too dodgy!

Care to explain why? just for interest's sake.

Just the fact he wont accept questions through Ebay is enough imo to show its a con ... looks like the text for that is a photo as well, not typed into the auction details. At a guess I would say its a hijacked account.
Plus hes working in USD when the account is UK based.

I have also noticed that it is in Home & Garden Section - Perhaps it's a "PLANT" (sorry)

On top of that, the purchase would be outside of eBay so you would not be able to leave feedback and would have no return.

I'd contact eBay if I were you to see if they have a fraud prevention area (tbh last time I looked eBay was ***** for fraud/rip-off prevention).

I would agree stay well clear, cheapest price on camerpricebuster is £2899 so why would someone sell them for a full £2000 less than the cheapest price.

His English is not great, UK acc yet selling in US $. also if this auction is for information only then I take it the sale would be outside EBAY so you would have no rights whatsoever. (taken from personal experience buying something through paypal outside ebay, item was fake. paypal told me the only obligation they have outside ebay is that the itam arives)

I wouldnt want you to waste your money, it would be nice if it were true I might even switch to Nikon

I would agree with Mike.P - it must be a hacked account. If Jessops were able to buy Nikon D3 in any bulk at that price, they would not be in the **** that they are.

Chris

must have been a con, it`s been removed from ebay

...or the seller found out that he was being slated on a public forum and removed the listing as he was never going to get the price he wanted with all that bad mouthing going on?

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

1200 bucks for a D3? shullbit!

Yes it's now off the listings as remarked earlier - Thanks for all the quick response.

It's fair bad mouthing though. It's so clearly and obviously a fraud that it otherwise goes by the name of David Icke.

General rule on ebay is that if the seller don't usually sell that type of item and they have an email address in the item description also sometimes asking you not use the contact seller button then it's generally a hacked account

Message received at 16.22 from seller

"Yes Sir,
It`s the original brand new product with warranty and all the accessories from the manufacturer. It only deppends by you.I can start up the shipping anytime."

Yeah right!

I have emailed him back asking why then has the item been removed from ebay

Anyone? Explain why? History?

Simple, his history have not included anything sufficiently large or expensive selling on a regular basis as hi suggested in the reply to OP's email. Apparently (according to article I read somewhere on a web recently) there is the whole underground business selling the established eBay accounts cheaply to fraudsters. What they do is create accounts that sells lots of small things (possibly not even for real where buyers are another fraudsters from their group of users), and after they gather a credible amount of feedback, they sell this eBay account to the highest bidding fraudster.

After that I am always suspicious about people on eBay selling some rubbish and then suddently converting to high priced item like GBP 3000 worth camera...

I think eBay and their history ratings system need to be updated only to include ratings from the active eBay users - when they find and remove those fraudsters one by one, the value of their fakes sales/buys is also reducing making it harder for them to do...

You may have read it here, I posted about a site I came across where Ebay accounts were openly for sale, priced depending upon location, feedback score etc. Apparently Ebay know all about the site and monitor activity on it, but for some reason they don't close the site, or the accounts down

Thanks to all contributors for the info on this eBay business I knew it smelled but it's nice to know that all you guys came up with the answers - thats what's great about TP

Incidentally while I'm writing this another email has just come in

"The advertisement was only informative as i told you since my first email as i don`t have time to put auctions for each product and customer. To see that i am a serious business man interested to make a deal i will trust you and accept to make a secure deal for your safety for our first deal but i hope that there won`t be any problems in our future business. We`ll make the deal through escrow.I will ship the package through GPS 48 hours service and provide you the tracking number so you can see details about the package and to be sure that it was shipped and you can check it`s status anytime and after that you will make the payment through western union so i can receive the money directly cash as i told you that i need to pay the products cash to the factory and i also have a lot of other payments to make or you can make a bank transfer directly to my account so we can be under bank`s protection for security. So if you agree just confirm so i can start up the shipping process and provide you the tracking number so you can make the payment right away.If yes we can make the deal and close it in 48 hours.Let me know.Thank you!"

He doesn't give up does he!!

The only way I would deal with this guy is if I got the camera in advance of payment and we all know that would not happen!

Payment via Escrow? Don't make me laugh!

Basically a brand new D3 offered for $1,200 is simply and indisputably a scam! Believe this offer only if you believe that I would sell you genuine £20 notes for a fiver each. ;)

Yep that was it, thanks Flash...

I still can't believe eBay is not closing them down.
