my D80 is at the menders, 3weeks maybe!!!. im going to get a D200 tomorow will i notice a great difrence between the two ,and ive heard that the sigma 10-20mm has a slight problem with the D200. any advice appreceated.

I've not had any problems with the sigma on my d200 and I use it every day. If anything, it's actually better than on my old d70 (nah, I can't work it out either)

I don't think you'll notice anything different in the IQ area as they have the same sensor. It's just heavier and better built, more buttons and more options. Oh, and it may the slightly better AF unit too, but I'm not sure about that.

you probably wont want your d80 back.

The main thing you will notice is the handling. The layout is totally different! Months after switching from a D70, I'm still getting used to it! The D200 has the Nikon 'pro' layout (shared with the D2x/Dsh etc), whereas all of Nikon's enthusiast cameras share a completely different layout.

The weight is another factor.

I believe the latest firmware upgrade for the D200 cleared this up for the Sigma lenses that had the problem, or a friend tells me it cleared up the problem with his. Whether your D200 will have this upgrade installed, because it will probably have been in the sales pipeline for a while, I do not know.

In the past if you had this problem with a Sigma lens you had to return the lens to Sigma for re-chipping free. Don't know if the offer is still open though, you would have to contact Sigma.

What they all said & remember the D200 uses CF cards (D80 is SD iirc) - There's an offer to get a free copy of Capture NX with a new D200 so make sure you get yours (even if you don't use it it's worth @ £100!)

Friend of mine is the local town pro and he shoots a D200. A tricky beast according to him and he has been a hard core Nikon man for years!

Guy who works his P/S stuff owns a D80. They agree that the d80 is by far the easier camera to learn and the results don't stand back half an inch for the 200.

just got it home , had to use a forklift to get it through the door, its a bit on the weighty side, tried the sigma no problems that i can see looking forward to getting out tommorow .

What are you guys going on about weight?!?:bonk:

You would need two independantly calibrated weigh-less scales to tell the difference in weight between just about any two dslr's

:bonk: :bonk: :bonk:

:D

Magnesium body does weigh more than a plastic body Anton.

Let's get real here for 1 second only...How many grams are we talking about?:suspect:

Come on:bonk:

I can very much vouch for the fact there is a significant weight difference between a 70/80 style body and a 200 - I have both, and its very noticable!

Totally different beasts too as has already been said, but both have their place....for me the 70s stil wins when in use with 70-300, mainly because I can still hand hold it

Fair enough but the issue here is one of weight and my opinion is that, by the time you have a lens, grip, spare battery and flash on, any weight difference becomes academic and negligible...

Maybe I should buy a D80...SD cards must weigh less...:bonk:

Well not everyone uses a grip, in fact 'most' D70/80 uses probably dont as a habit and I think you are very wrong about the lens, the weight of lens remains the same, but the balance totally changes if the body weight is significantly different and thats where you have to adapt. Like I say, I am speaking from current experiece unfortunately....and being a feeble wussy woman by my own admission! :p ;)

Having both the D50 and D200 I can say there is a noticeable difference in the weight and balance of the camera.
I dont help matters with having the battery grip an 80-400 on it most of the time.

D80: 585g
D200: 830g

% increase 42%

:)

Game, set & match to Joe  - Not like you Anton you're normally quite sensible  - perhaps Canon discussions are more your thing  ... Paul ;)

Sensible was what I tried to install into this thread, but alas, weight was not the original topic and I think we have hijacked far enough...

Griping about 245 grams...

:cuckoo:

4 extra metal pixies makes all the difference to resolution!

does indeed.

I've just been going back through some old shots I took with the d70 and it would seem that none of them are very sharp. I'm starting to wonder if it didn't have some sort of focus issue.

There was a 'suspected' back-focus issue with the D70 but I must admit with the 2 we had it never exhibited itself!
