D200 pictures remaining

Try taking all the shots of something with loads of detail like trees and grass and see how many you get then :)

RAW uses a lossless compression. More detail = harder to compress.
 
Hi Joe - I remembered reading about this somewhere & although its from Ken Rockwell's D200 blurb I'm sure he's actually got this right (:naughty:)
Remaining Shots Indication

The D200 has the same firmware defect as the D70. It underestimates the number of remaining shots. My 512MB card holds 235 images at Large Normal JPG, size priority. The D200 claims I'll only get 166 with the same card empty.

The D200 errs on the safe side. No big deal, these are just approximations. Other cameras estimate more closely

Suppose if it said 70 left and you got 50 you'd be annoyed. Tell you too few and you'll be pleased at the bonus :lol:

A detailed google search confirms this. The camera does not update itself for the compressed RAWs. This is Nikon being very conservative! The compression is up to 50%, which is a lot of images!

Bit annoying!
 
Actually, this was the case with the D100, then the D70 exhibited the same characteristic which was "fixed" with the D70s firmware update. I'm not sure it's something I find frustrating because it's always errs on the side of caution. It's just Nikon saying, "In the worst case scenario....".

Even uncrompressed RAWs are different file sizes, something I'm not convinced as to why. I can understand the compressed files showing different numbers remaining because of the algorithm. But uncompressed - not sure. :shrug:
 
For the record Joe when I was at RAF Lakenheath a few months back I shot about 20-25 shots and the camera kept telling me I only had 1 left? I had the same with the D50. Think it might be a Nikon trait, as long as it doesnt do it with my F80 (film)!

Anyway, it just seems to be oe of those things you are going to have to live with.

PS: My D200 is on its way back, all fixed.
 
My D50 does a similar thing, with a 1G card it says 119 shots but I know it can take at least 180, just got to get on with it :shrug: .
