Merry Christmas everyone.

My sister has asked for her d40x back so I need to pick up a body soon.

Currently don't have the budget to get a D200.

Ideally I would have a body with a full functioning battery grip, which is the d100. However I can pick a d70 from mpb for £74. I want to get the best I can in hope I don't feel the need to upgrade when I have spare cash in the summer.

Thoughts?

What's your budget? It could be worth popping an ad into the wanted section, if you haven't already?

Not looking at spending any more than £100, when summer comes around I'm going to look at a D200.

I had a D70s a couple of years ago which I loved.

The D100 is a contender because of the battery grip. ..but mpb having D70 for £74 is tempting with the view of upgrading in a few months.

But the other side of the table is that I could buy a D100 with Grip and be really happy to a point where I don't feel the need to upgrade.

I'm currently watching a couple of D100' on ebay, with battery grips.

Honestly, which is the better camera? Would i be happy enough with the D100 & grip to not want to upgrade to a D200 with grip in a few months?

Or do i just save myself a few £££ and buy the D70 & then upgrade to a D200 anyway later in the year?

If you buy a D70 for around £80 now, you'll be able to sell it for not much less than that when you go for the D200 - think of it as rental!

I'd do it - after all, what you need is a camera and the D70 is a rather fine camera, especially for that sort of price!

I've owned both (still have my original D70).

On paper the D100 is a better camera. In my hands I prefer the D70.

At £74 it has done its depreciating ;) Plus, if you're into flash, Nikon have never made a better strobist camera.

To be honest i have been thinking that at that price i can't really go wrong, especially for a couple of months.

Then the wife half of me thinks that if i get the d70 now i will just be spending the extra cash on a D200/2X for the sake of a battery grip, I know it will be more than that though.

Why are these decisions so sodding difficult?!

Does the d70 have the high sync speed like the d40?

1/8000 on the D70

Flash isn't hugely an issue for me at the moment.

Maybe not - but it means a D70 will hold its value better/be easier to sell on than a D100 - plenty of people want that feature.

I suppose....i think my mind has been made up.

I'll have a look in LCE tomorrow just to see if they have any deals on, then probably purchase a D70 from MPB.

The D100s seem to be a specialist camera in terms of the market for people purchasing them.

I'd be foolish not to pick the D70 in the view that i'm going to be upgrading in the future.....coupled with the fact i loved my previous D70s

well the bullet has been bitten.

D70 ordered from mpb. They had sold the one I wanted with 7500 clicks. ...however that highlighted another they had with 3004 clicks.

So a low shutter count D70 for £74

I will report back when it's been delivered on Monday.

A D70 for £74 quid sounds a real bargain! They are cracking cameras capable of great images. Enjoy!

My first DSLR was a D70, I owned it for a number of years and really loved it. In some ways I regret selling it, and only did so to fund a D300s upgrade which I hated almost as soon as bought it :bonk:

The D70 is a cracking camera, got mine in 2005 and it went all over the place with me. It survived being dropped on a rock at the grand canyon, countless urbex missions, spent several damp hours being dragged underground in an abandoned coalmine, etc. it only failed once when it inexplicably froze suddenly, which was solved by taking the battery out and putting it back in again. I only replaced it with a D700 as I wanted something better for use in low light.

it's only going to be a stop gap until I can get the funds together for a D200/300 or D2x later n the year but it was certainly the better choice. especially with only 3k actuations.

You won't be disappointed with the D70, I still have and use two of mine.

I've had issues with the D100's white balance, and even shooting in RAW hasn't helped. Only when I fiddle with the 'tint' in ACR does it yield what I want

Personally, I preferred my D70 over my D200 and kept the 70 when the 200 went to help finance the D700. While the D100 was considered a pro level camera in its day, the D70 was an improvement on it in many ways.

Well it turned up yesterday along with my lenses and cf card.

Over the moon! Condition is fantastic and better than expected, pretty much as new. Really impressed with mpb and will definitely bare them in mind when the hunt for a D200 arrises
