as a few of you know, i bought a replacement mountain bike a few weeks ago.

i was confused when i bought it because the thumb lever on the gears goes up gears, and the finger leaver goes down. Thats the opposite to my last bike even though the gears are shimano on them both.
Is this normal?

I thought it might just be one of those things, but today i noticed the numbers on the gear change also go up when i change down and down when i change up!

Is there something funny going on?

Ummmm, AFAIK you thumb has always gone "up" a gear as you need the dexterity of it to push a gear in sometimes.

I admit though that I haven' used me new MB THAT much and really need to get back out there.

Learning to ride in SPD's again really is like "falling off a bike"!

which group set is it?

Shimano did change some of theirs.

My old XTR shifters rattle down to the higher gears on the rear (smaller cogs) with the finger and climb the cassette with the thumb.

Every MTB i have had for racing the thumb (bottom lever) on the RHD side goes up from the smallist cog, upto the largest cog. The LHD will go from the smallest cog to the largest, with the smaller levers going lrge to small.

On the road bikes i went onto moving the bike levers with hand to from smallest cog to bigger cog, and a little thumb switch to go large to small.
