cw318is's Photo 52 only 7 shots to go!

Week 27 - Elaborate by cw318is, on Flickr

I don't know what it is about vintage engines but they just seem so elaborately made to me, take the crank gearwheels on this 1916 rotary engine, massively complex when you look at the actual mechanics of it.

Having a bit of a steampunk thing at the moment, so tried to process this shot in a similar vein!

Hiya Caleb,

 I see the Impreza has returned to the project once again :D As a Scooby driver I too have 2 x 'bright' buttons ..... 1 on the A/C control button and 1 on the steering column lights instrument control stick.

If I'm not mistaken they are to control the brightness of clock display and instrument panel illumination. For instance when driving with the lights on in gloomy daylight (as we often do here in the UK) or in twilight this button can be used if one feels it is too hard to identify the indicator/instrument lights clearly. But as for such a big button on the Impreza :cuckoo: surely that could have been put to better use for something else .... like an 'ejector seat' button for those back-seat drivers

Onto 'smell' .... I really like this photo, nice DOF and focus on the 'Camembert'. And yummy cheese too .... any time of day for me

Well done on catching up on two weeks, look forward to seeing the others soon.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Yup, it's sole purpose in life is to dim the LCD clock on the instrument cluster dashboard which is a whole 32mmx7mm. Seems as though its the biggest most prominant switch on the dash it is perhaps the most mundane reason possible.

Hi Caleb

Great idea for smell & well taken...was it DOF or PP that gave the blur effect ? Think I'd have prefered to see a little more of the chequered lining of the box & maybe a little more of the cheese itself but like how you've caught the grain of the box itself along with the writing  Whats the lighter patch to the top right ?

Bright....amazing how manufacturer's make so much out of something so little!
Good shot & spot on for the theme

well done on the catch up & look forward to seeing your placeholder shots

Hi Lynn,

It was dof on the cheese, with the sigma macro that I'm still getting the hang of. Just added my rescue shot so I'm slowly catching up!

Thanks everyone for the comments. You know its just as nice getting feedback and crit sometimes then it is to actually go and take photos.

Is it natural or added rain?

Now as per Neil...is the rain real or pp'd

Wooop if you have to ask that means I've done something right! If it was real you would have little illuminated auras around the nav lights which I couldn't work out how to do. Funnily enough that shot was taken on an absolutely gorgeous summers day last saturday.

caleb..just a quick note... you've got some great shots here... waiting to see those placeholders filled... love the rescue shot.. i'm guessing you added the rain without reading anyone elses comments..looks a bit PS?? ... and maybe just cloned off the tip of the rotor blade disappearing off the pic??

Crikey, how did I get so far behind! Just gone back and filled in some of the place holders, been taking photos the past couple of days only got 6 more to do and I'm back up to date!

Week 30 - Decided to play a joker for this one so did a reshoot for Rescue;

Week 30 - Wildcard (Rescue Again) by cw318is, on Flickr

Thinking behind this shot being exceptionally dark. Its a SR-71 Blackbird, something that spent most of its life shrouded in secrecy with it being a spyplane at the height of the cold war, so wanted something with a bit of mystery as to its actual shape.

Hi Caleb, nice catch up. Good to see you going on with your project.
I really like the rescue reshoot, like the air of mystery about it, works very well for me.

Elaborate, Really like the processing on this one, and it certainly fits the the well. A shame you have missed a bit off the bottom, but still a nice shot.

Celebrate, Great subject matter for the theme!,

Smell, Nice composition, lighting looks good.

So once again well done for catching up with these, I shall look out for the rest.

Just gone looking for the latest updates on the place holders, any chance you could add a link in future, it would be easier for us!

Elaborate, it fits the theme, but I don't like teh composition.
The engine is cropped at the bottom, too close to the left margin and there is too much dead space top right.

Rescue is good.
Looks dark on the works monitor, but they always do!
Was this taken with the theme in mind or a stock photo with the word rescue on?
For me, the word needs to be positioned differently in the frame for the theme so you lose the black space top left

Keep going though, you only have a few weeks to catch up!!

Hi

I like the idea behind the re shoot but the angle doesn't work for me. Like so many I 'read' the image from left to right and I spent time looking on the left side of the image looking for the theme. I agree with Neil that the text is too late in the 'read'. I also found the image too dark, I know you don't want it bright and need to maintain the mystery but, not for me.

Thanks for the replies guys, the placeholders just filled were Celebrate, Elaborate and Rescue v2.

Elaborate was a bit tricky as the engine was on an unsightly stand and I couldn't get that close to it. I will give it a slightly different crop to see if that makes a difference.

Rescue v2 was taken specifically for this 52 (it was my second choice, first was a conventional yellow and black RESCUE arrow) Just with the subject I thought it lent itself to having big expanses of black and a hard to see edge, but taken from that angle to keep the cockpit line

Don't think I'll bother with placeholders any more, I'm going to post the ones I've done now out of sequence!

Week 36 - Time by cw318is, on Flickr

The fantastic glass wall memorial counting the cost of American 8th Air Force losses in the second world war, a poignant reminder of those who time stands still for.

I can't think of anything louder, at 132db....

Week 39 - Volume by cw318is, on Flickr

Thats the back of a jet engine, including afterburner chamber

Week 43 - Abstract by cw318is, on Flickr

I loved the colours on these hydraulic controls, thought that it looked a bit abstract in context - bright pretty colours on an absolutely massive and somewhat lethal artillery piece.

Really like these Caleb, excellent portrayals of the theme, volume is great, super composition and it rally stands out. Abstract is excellent too, love those colours, really sets it off. Excellent use of dof on the lens case.

Hiya Caleb,

Well done on the catch up and glad to see you are still with us.

My fav has to be the Volume shot, absolutely love this one.

The Fun pic is so cute.

Time is very poignant and the mono works well for this shot.

The abstract is different, not quite my cuppa but I like the colours and the angle and DOF.

Weave is great, lovely DOF and actually quite abstract too.

Even though I don't really know much about planes, I actually like your Rescue shot .... I think the darkness adds to the message conveyed.

Well done

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hi Caleb,

I love Time, nice DOF.
I'd rather there bottom wasn't cropped out though.

Fun looks more like Cute, but still a nice picture.

Volume looks more abstract to me, now I think I understand what abstract is!
A nice shot though and good detail and colours.

Sorry, but your abstract isn't saying abstract to me.
I like the colours and the DOF though.
A slightly different angle may improve the image, I'm thinking that the red bar bit could have come in from th elower left corner a bit more as the bottom half of the image looks dull compared to the colourful top off.

Weave is good, but it looks more abstract tan your abstract!
Nice DOF

Love your Volume shot but until I read the caption I was happy it was Abstract!!!

Abstract is a good competent image but it doesn't appeal artistically as well as other images of yours.

Weave is a great image that demonstrates good control of dof, I like it :thumbs

Well done, keep it up ;)

Hi Caleb

what a catch up !

Time...love this shot , great angle , mono suits it perfectly , a very poignant image  ( would maybe have cropped the righthand side slightly )

Fun.....I'm always a sucker for wildlife shots so for that you get a  from me.....agree with someone else it maybe says more cute than fun ...a shot of them playing would have been bang on :)

Weave...like the mono & the DOF... says more abstract to me though, maybe a higher angle ?

Volume...again says abstract to me...ha to read the words to realise it was a jet engine but....like the detail & the colors....if only pictues could make sound:lol:

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Now some reasoning behind my shots:

Abstract. My interpretation of abstract is bright and contrasting colours in a setting not expected - thinking back to the abstract paintings I have seen they have been very bright and of some displacement. When I see recurring patterns I don't think of them as being abstract in nature, although it is clear that some do. Those bright colours to me just seemed completely out of place in a massive gun emplacement.

Volume. Jet engines are incredibly loud, so I chose to create an image from the noisiest bit, the jet pipe and afterburner chamber. The colours in the photo are slightly exaggerated but basically come from heat staining at high temperature.

Weave. My initial thought was for something wooly like a jumper, however looking at the case for my 100-400 I thought the woven carbon-esque material actually looked quite interesting when you look at the individual threads and how despite being grey they make the case look white when you look at it.

Crikey, how did I get so far behind! Just gone back and filled in some of the place holders, been taking photos the past couple of days only got 6 more to do and I'm back up to date!

oh no.!! ... i looked at this pic Caleb (not read the text) and thought...mmm sr-71 cockpit??? surely not... OMG!!! .. then read text... does this make me a :geek: or what!!! .. love the mood of it. great work for keeping going..

Jumping all over the place now!

Week 26 - Sensual by cw318is, on Flickr

I've always liked perfumes! In fact I'm sure a lot of people can find them quite alluring and really plays on the senses!

Week 31 - Wind by cw318is, on Flickr

Famous car mascot known for having the wind in her hair. This is one of those shots that I just can't be happy with so will have another shot at some time in the future.

Sensual
Not sure the selective colour works as the reflection is B&W.

Wind
Nice idea, I would have preferred some of the car bonnet in the frame.

Pair
Great idea and bang on theme without being obvious.

Safe
And you own a knife like that for what reason!
Nice simple on theme shot.
Only neg is the envelope being too close to the left hand side of the frame.

Hi Neil,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Yes agree with the selective colouring on the bottle, unfortunately my wallpaper is chocolate and purple flowery stuff in that room so thought the background was a bit too distracting with all the colours and stuff going on. I might actually remove the reflection alltogether as I'm not sure it adds anything??

Wind - I would have loved to have the bonnet in shot as well, unfortunately I only own the radiator emblem and not the full car :'(

Safe - because I'm a yachtsman! Agree with how close the envelope is to the left, unfortunately ran out of space on that edge but might have a go at cloning back some space.

Sensual

I quite like this, the selective colour is not too obvious - I feel either the whole reflection or none...

Wind

Hmm, doesn't say wind to me, Spirit of Ecstasy :shake: However you have caught nice detail and I feel you could have included her base.

Pair

I agree with Neil here

Safe

I like this shot also, is that your handwriting? Do you have occasional outbursts of temper ;)? Bang on theme and a new take.
