Alright, guys I am at a crossroads here... Having purchased a x100 and now x100s and the quality shots I get from it are really close to ones I get using the 6D never been so impressed with the picture quality on a non-dslr camera. So that leads me to the real question how good is the X-E1? Could I get away with it once the 70-200 is out? I know the A/F probably won't be quite a 6D but at least it won't weigh a ton.. I'm most interested in how the 35mm 1.4 shoots at night is it close to the 50mm 1.4 on my canon? Advice opinions throw em all out there I have spent many an hour finding deals on my canon gear so not in a rush to change but on the other hand the wife says I have too much kit I don't use on a regular basis....lol

Can't comment on the E-X1 but since I bought an X100, then the X-Pro 1 I haven't touched my Canon gear aside from the speedlites.

Well the x-pro is also a consideration but not sure the extra money is worth it.. Love the OVF but I do find I can be more sure things are in focus with the EVF....

I've done pretty much exactly what you're considering (Nikon D600 to X-E1 in my case ) and haven't looked back. There's virtually no difference in image quality and I now have my kit with me virtually all the time as opposed to it being stuck in the house.

I considered the backwards step I was taking in terms of AF, but in reality I hardly ever shot fast moving things, and thus far it hasn't been an issue.

The 35mm is a cracking lens capable of great images! I'm still unsure if it's for me though, I much prefer the wider focal length offered by my X100 (23mm vs 35mm). My dillema is whether I go for the newly announced 23mm over the 35mm and ditch the X100, or just throw caution to the wind and get both?

All in, it's a fantastic package, the "kit" 18-55 is great as is the 55-200, the 35 is excellent (but maybe not or me) and the 14mm is absolutely superb!!

Thanks for the post! I love the 6D 50mm 1.4 because I find I shoot more that style or location (pub or evening out) than anything else. But the downside is on a night out I don't want to be a photographer or as I'm from Texas my wife says I look like a tourist... All that aside my x100s has the 23mm so if I went 35mm 1.4 on the e-x1 that would be my 50mm prime. Just need to see if I can justify a 200mm and I'm not sure I can.. :(

I've been a full frame and crop shooter before and can honestly say I preferred the images from my X-E1 over any camera I've owned previously (particuarly as a JPEG shooter), the 14mm and 35mm are stunning. For me personally it's the best current mirrorless system in terms of size/weight vs image quality.

Unfortunately as a sport shooter I need a telephoto, and the 55-200, whilst a great lens, failed on me twice (two seperate lenses) and I've lost confidence in it.

If I could afford to maintain two systems it I would be DSLR for sports / X-E1 for everything else in a heartbeat.

This is encouraging to read, as I too have been considering selling my DSLR and going for something smaller and lighter. The X-E1 has certainly grabbed my interest and looks like it could be the way to go. If I thought I could live with just one fixed focal length lens then I think I'd buy the X100S, but I feel it would just be a little too limiting for my varied use.

That's my problem I can't do just one FL... (why I haven't ditched the 6D for x100s) I don't shoot sports so that makes them a bit more appealing to me but I do enjoy airshows and the like hence my interest in the 200mm...yet I may be better off loaning for such events as they are not something I do a lot.

I've been pondering an X-pro for some time and nearly pulled the trigger recently when they had the free lens offer. However, having used a D700 for several years, I'm used to fast AF, and have a large range of lenses from super wide angle to long telephoto. At the moment, I can't justify the Fuji, but I'll see if the X-pro 2 comes out next year and how that performs, along with the future lenses. I might just keep the long and wide lenses for the D700 and buy a Fuji for everything else.

I have looked a little into getting a smaller system even thought the 550D is small. Be nice to have an all round camera with great IQ i guess. I am not one for lens changing.

Another one here, who has mainly swap over to the Fuji system,my Nikon full frame was just getting to heavy to carry around so much.

And the 35mm F1.4 is very good, its not perfect system but what system is,and with the updates the autofocus has improved on both the XE-1 & X1-pro.

:)

I'm most interested in how the 35mm 1.4 shoots at night is it close to the 50mm 1.4 on my canon?

My concern here is night shooting with any EVF equipped camera. I've only tried two CSC with EVF's, my own G1 and a Nex 6, and both had such high light output even when adjusted for best effect that I personally can't use them for genuine night time shooting as they ruin night vision and cause severe eye strain, very quickly.

If you're just talking about a relatively well lit high street at night you might be ok but I'd want to try before I buy for true low light, night time, near darkness or true dark shooting. Another problem with EVF's is is the dynamic range high enough? Mine blacks up and fails to display things clearly visible by eye.

For me, the CSC's with EVF's that I've tried (just the two...) were simply no match for an OVF for true low light shooting. In fact I'd go so far as to say they're unuseable.

Excellent point just tested out the 100s in the pitch black garden and there is a slight difference over light from OVF/EVF. Not sure if it would be any better on a 1.4 vs my F/2... no comparison to a 6D.. :)

Based on what I've been reading I'd really like to try though. I may just get used to it and and find a whole new level of enjoyment from my photography. A bit of an expensive gamble though!

I was in the same dilema and just decided to bite the bullet!
It was goodbye to the Gripped Canon 50D, Sigma 10-20, sigma 30mm 1.4 and Canon 24-105L plus filters, loads of batteries etc etc, basically a big heavy bag full of gear that never got out as I couldn't find the enthusiasm - it basically got no use in 6 months!

I bought the X-E1 as a kit with the 18-55 and also the 35mm 1.4 and I must say I love it! Don't regret the decision, although it is very different to use! It's also good at higher ISO.

Definitely the right move for me, and certainly enjoying capturing light again :)

Really tempted now.... They still have the deal on to get a free 18mm lens so that would defiantly get me started for right at £1000 for the two lenses I'm most interested in.

Swapped a 50D for an X-E1 back in March and have never been so impressed. I also had the 50mm f1.4, and the wider 35mm f1.4 is (for me) a much better focal length. I will probably pick up the 56 f1.2 when it's released though because I did use my 50 for portraits.

Night shooting is a breeze and usable ISO up to 6400 is far superior to what I had with the Canon.

I shot my #2 daughters prom with the X-E1 and the 18-55 and focus is definitely slower. I got a lot more keepers from #1 daughters prom with the 50D and the 24-105. However the 35mm portraits taken beforehand were far superior on the little Fuji.

I swapped for weight reasons. Back problems meant that the 50D + 24-105/70-200 + bag of stuff was all too much. I've got a small messenger bag now which takes the X-E1, 14, 27, 35 & 18-55 and can wander round town easily.

If I was a sport shooter I think I'd have stuck with the DSLR, but I'm not, and have not regretted the switch.

Ian.

I am interested in the portability of a smaller camera. Like others have said, having a big DSLR and lens etc can be a put off sometimes.

I'm looking at replacing my D600 with one of the Fuji cameras, as I want something smaller but also want excellent IQ.

I previously had an X-Pro 1 before all the firmware and AF improvements and was happy with it then but the 18mm offer has got me tempted to by the cheaper XE1, the 35mm and 18mm kit rather than the XP1.

I've ordered both from Amazon today for me to give them a try side by side and see what I prefer, a shade over £1000 for the XE1, 18mm and 35mm seems a bargain v the £900 body only for the X-Pro 1 but need to see how the XE1 does for handling v its bigger brother!

I love the X-Pro 1 + 35mm. It's just so nice to use and produces superb quality images. I'm not sure I will ditch the DSLR yet, but I can absolutely see why people do. Plus the Fuji customer service is second to none I have ever experienced. The way the listen to customers and react is excellent too.

I can feel my wallet twitching!

For me it still comes down to the very personal decision of fixed FL on the X100S or flexible lens options of the X-E1. The downside (for me) of the X-E1 is that it is still relatively bulky with lens attached.

More deliberating to do, but I can definately see one of these cameras replacing my DSLR kit soon.

This is the reason I got the x100 because its my take everywhere camera with a slim light lens. If I move to the x-e1 it will be my DSLR replacement not my carry everywhere because especially with a 18-55 its still a bit chunky.

If you are going to leave X-E1 at home just like your DSLR gear, then why replace it and loose out when you sell your existing gear?

A fair point.... Love the x100s so will be keeping it because I have it all the time at work ect. But when I would go out to an event I would normally take my dslr say to dog shows or airshows concerts... So its not that I always leave its just I might be more willing to take a smaller camera and lens than a whole bag of kit.

Watching this thread with interest. I'm seriously tempted to move away from my 5D & 3 primes for an X100. Have fancied one for quite awhile now.

I had a quick look at an XE-1 yesterday with the 18-55mm lens and it's definitely a compromise size wise.

I think the X100 would suit me better personally, especially with the X10 I have, if I want the extra focal length from time to time.

I have the x100s and it is a brilliant camera but not sure I can be happy using one lens. I must say for 90% its just fine. Having trouble justifying a X-E1 also... But really want to have the f1.4 50mm and 200mm that I currently cover with the dslr.

Next question do I go for the X-E1 with 35mm 1.4 and free 18mm or 18-55mm kit. Really like the 50mm FL and thats what I used the most on my Canon. But then again 18-55 also covers that range... The free 18 isn't going to bring enough to get the 18-55 so any suggestions?

Personally I'd get the 35mm 1.4 if you can't also get the 18-55. The 18-55 is a cut above your standard kit lens, but the 35mm is excellent. The low light performance would also be very versatile. I have both and tend to use either the 35mm or 14mm. The 18-55 is great as a travel lens in my opinion.

Regards,
Steve

I see your thinking,i go for the XE-1 with the 35mm then you can sell on the 18mm say about £250,then maybe look for an S/H 18-55 if your lucky you might just be able to pick one up around the £300-£350.

:)
