Curious question

Just a random thought I'm sure it's been asked before I might have even asked in a thread before but can't remember.

I was wondering how I can use my studio lights outside, could you as a cheap alternative use a car battery with an inverter or would the power etc not be right?

An inverter would need to be a fairly expensive pure sine wave model. The question has been asked here before. Also here, and here too.
There have been an awful lot of discussions in the past, to be honest.

I see that tlc-direct do some good inverters reasonably priced. Would a car battery not be a smooth source of electricity with a decent inverter. Surely it won't be as dirty and spike like a generator?

Again, it's down to the inverter. Decent generators with pure sine wave inverters are fine, and Honda do some good ones that are fairly quiet. Car batteries must also have a good quality pure sine wave inverter too.

What would you class as a good sin wave inverter?

Any that is labelled as producing a "pure" sine wave, rather than a "modified" sine wave. This is one on ebay, but there will be cheaper ones, but they must state "Pure" sine wave.
To be honest, you may as well buy something like the Tronix kit, or something similar.
