Yes
Since I'm not in a position to be able to get my gear out and try it myself, can anyone tell me what will happen if I CTO/CTB gel my flashgun and then modify the light with say, an umbrella or a softbox?

You will still get the effect of the gel when using a softbox or umbrella.

Ok, I though that would be the case but wasn't 100% sure. Thanks Hacker

I took this today (Tungsten WB and CTO) but would prefer a softer light (which I didn't have with me).

move the light further away, will soften it a bit

erm that makes it harder :D

you mean to make its effect less noticeable - drop the power

One of thoose things I do every day yet I'm never sure what i do
But your right :bonk:

I had wondered about this as well. I thought it DIDN'T make a difference, because the gelled light is then being diffused by, say, a softbox with a white diffuser.

its all good, better to **** up theory and nail shots than to nail theory and produce dull technically correct shots

shouldn't white be colour neutral?
or does it have a bleaching effect - somewhere where I am uncertain :D

The thick plottens! Anybody got a definitive answer?

EDIT: Actually, Hacker sounded fairly sure of himself!

touche !

depends how dirty your diffuser is.
but yes white is color neutral it'll take on any color that is shone on it / through it

You may have to use say a full cut rather a half or a half rather than a quarter, but it depends what effect you are after - have a look at some of our own Tomas Whitehouse's work, he's a master with the old cto gels

Okay, here are a couple of examples with differing gel/WB combos.

1. Auto WB, full CTO gel and bare flash quite far away (camera left) to try and recreate an evening sunset glow. Background was underexposed by about a stop as it was still daylight.

2. WB set to Tungsten, full CTO gel on flash fired through an Ezybox Hotshoe softbox reasonably close to the subjects

3. Same settings again with the background underexposed by about 1.7 stops...

4. This time, the settings are almost reversed, the WB was set manually to around 8000k and a full CTB gel was fixed to the flash, again background underexposed.

5. No gel used for this but still fired through the softbox and the background underexposed to bring out the colours of the sunset
