CS6 Resizing issue

By image size do you mean it's pixel dimensions, or it's file size on disc?

To change pixel image size...

Image/Image size.

Just type the size you require, either across, or height in the pixel dimensions boxes at the top. Make sure constrain proportions is ticked or altering one only will distort the image.

If you mean the file size, then it depends... making the image lower in resolution as above will also make it smaller as a file size, but the most efficient way is to save it as a JPEG, and then you can select the quality.

File/Save As and select JPEG

Higher the quality, the the better it looks, but the larger the file. Lower the quality and the file will get smaller, but quality will suffer. You can also use "File/Save For Web" which can give you a side by side comparison of before and after for best judging how much JPEG compression to use.

Many thanks David,

I'm still confused, when I hit File/ Save As I get the below box, but not the JPEG options box in your image above ?

as far as I know, you have to resize it first and THEN save it

the only options you get at file/save as as how compressed you want the JPEG to be.
Also you can use the command "SAVE FOR WEB" in the file menu.
That, i think, gives you file size options.

double checked
so resizing the canvas on which the image is sitting, IMAGE menu- CANVAS SIZE
resizing the image, let say from 5000x4000px to 1000x800px, IMAGE menu - IMAGE SIZE
Then FILE/SAVE AS
Or just FILE/SAVE FOR WEB and the file pixel dimensions are on the bottom right of the dialog box I see (PC version, PS CC)

one more thing, changing the "quality" of the image will not change the number of pixels but it will change the filesize in Mb or Kb as the lower quality means that less image information is retained. JPEG/JPG is an image compression format so lower quality means less clarity in the image but a smaller size on your harddrive.

Thanks Diz, I'm aware of going to the image Size box first. But my issue is, I am not getting / seeing the JPEG Options Box, that's my problem.

Where do I get this box from ? Is there something i have to check or uncheck in Preferences ?

Can you have a look at this link, this is what I am doing ?

Thank you very much

I can't see your issue either
I get a JPEG options box after activating the save
people actually seem to have problems disabling this box and I can't see anything in the preferences either.
To get around this use for the SAVE FOR WEB command as you can set the filesize
there is an option in the corner which you can use if you don't want to experiment with 'quality' settingView attachment 9643

Many thanks for looking at this Diz, very helpful. I'll try the Save for Web option when I next get back to my desktop. Thank you so much - Nick

Nick, none of the above is wrong, and I'm working from memory here (my memory!) The JPEG options dialog appears after you click save in the standard save as dialog, (assuming you have selected JPEG as the image format), then I think it appears again the first time you save the image again after that. Then I think it just assumes you want the same quality settings. The Save for Web is a good method of saving - if it is for the web / email etc.

Another method of addressing image size is the crop tool. Just select Size and Resolution at the left side of the toolbar, (when the crop tool is selected) (where it usually says Unconstrained) and fill in the image size and res you want. You then have the choice of cropping the whole image to the size entered or performing a crop in the traditional sense at the same time.

thinking about it, there are similar tools that I use the export and cropping options in lightroom, so it makes sense that they're there in PS

Maybe it's just me, but I find the LR export a bit 'quick and dirty'. Fine for batch processing but not for a quality image. (LR4)
