Arrgh, this is doing my head in! Something happened the other day, and now when viewing an image in CS5 it's centred on the screen, not to the left and in between the pallets the way it used to be, so the right hand side of the image is hidden now. Apart from that, the gap at the left hand side is just as annoying.

I've reset preferences, changed screen modes and checked every menu I can, but no joy..... I know I'll kick myself in the nuts when someone tells me how to fix it, but I still need to know....

Click and drag the top dark bar above the histogram to the right and it should dock.

Tried that about 100x already and just tried it again without any joy - the left-hand palettes snap to the left and top, but the right-hand palettes only seem to snap to the right, not the top?

At this rate I'm going to end up uninstalling PS and deleting all registry entries and folders then reinstalling - don't want to though!

Will give that a try when I get home again, Dave. Fingers crossed!

Cheers....

I realise you have already done it but an alternative method

1. as a temporary measure you can just click and drag on the picture's information bar at the top, this will release it from the tab.

2. Change the setting using
Edit
Preferences
Interface
then ensure the "open documents as tabs" is unticked
2a. Untick "Enable Floating Document Window Docking"
OK

I like to be able to dock my window occasionally (by dragging it up to the top etc) so leave this ticked

Christine, thanks for the post. Strange you should mention that as I looked at those settings more than once but decided against changing them. I did click 'Restore default workspace' and this is what gets me.... the workspace when first installing PS isn't to centre the image (as in my problem) as far as I can remember, but is to have it left aligned. So why doesn't 'Restore default workspace' fix this?

Certainly one I won't forget in a hurry anyway...... :)

CS5 only uses tabbed images if you want it undocked just drag it out  or are we not talking CS5

but that wasnt your original prob, where the menus werent docked

I always make my own workspace really then its just a click away if it goes ts up, to restore it

also deleting the pref file will restore any photoshop

I had forgotten that - I have my own workspace as well, you can see it above as called it "retouching".

Must remember to go and back up the pref. file
