CS5 reviews on the fly ......everybody contribute.

It seems the Nik plugins dont do anything once you apply the process. A way round it for now is to either, goto the settings of the plugin Viveza as example and select "apply the filtered effect to the current layer" and that will work or if you like to control the effect, duplicate background and do the same. Works for all Nik plugins :)

I've got portraiture and noise ninja plugins to work under 32 bit - but no luck with OnOne

Thought I'd pitch in and say that ofcourse the content aware system is fantastic... but my favourite is the new edge awareness system for selections... this was a far more tedious job than cloning ever was...

See that always baffles me ..... will hope it is easier !

From the Nik website:

"We are actively working to add 64-bit compatibility to the Macintosh version of our Viveza 2 product and expect to be finished mid-year. Once the update for Viveza 2 is released, we will deliver cross-platform 64-bit versions of our remaining products as they become available."
Much more here

Check out the new lens correction feature........... what a difference on wide angled shots.

Bridge seems to work as advertised, does a much better job and is loads quicker than CS3 version.

Trying out Mask/extraction tool

I will admit this took me a looonnngg time and I am still not completely happy with it but it is my first attempt , she is a puppy in a rescue centre I visited recently

Had a go this afternoon with the Content aware fill!

I have just downloaded the trial version and had a quick play. I have never used photoshop before and was disappointed with the file organisation facilities; I can see why Lightroom is popular.

However, the CAF looks useful, this took 10 minutes for a complete beginner

Two completely different animals, Photoshop is purely about editing, not organisation.

Downloaded the Design Premium CS5 trial and I must say I like the 3D icons...

Anyways, aside from being fully 64-bit on OS X (woohoo, I don't wish I had a PC now! :D), I like the lens correction filter, had a real quick play with that and liked the results.

I was going to have a play with the content aware fill - but can't find it.

I haven't been at all impressed with content aware fill, tried 3 different files, all of them looked crap afterwards, got better results faster with using the clone tool manually, am I doing it wrong?

Are you guys just doing a rough selection of what you want removed and including some of the background or a fine selection?

The problem with the content aware fill etc is that now anyone can do it and those of us that spent hours using the clone tools etc are now out of a job :suspect:

I was thinking the exact same thing! There's not that many people who use the clone tool properly too IMO. :shake:

Very impressed by some of the examples posted, looks like its going to save me a lot of time and effort healing and cloning. Got a few shots I want to try to the recreate background or stuff outside the frame on too.

Surely it just means you can do it faster and use other skills you didn't have time to do before, it means you can do your job better and do different things that others can't do

To go from this

CAF-2.jpg

I did a few rough (but relatively tight) selections with the lasso tool for the lighting
Then used the ruler tool to straighten the horizon (Finally from Elements!!)
Then hit undo (which only undoes the crop ;) )
Used the magic wand to select the empty canvas (hold shift as I had 4 white bits to select)
Used Expand to make sure the selection overlapped into the image a little (gives CAF a helping hand...)
Then used CAF to fill in the blanks.

To get this

You can see the sensor dust marks have moved too

just used the refine edge on this photo ...

I would suggest that you could have contracted the selected area as there is a halo around the subject which makes it stand out as a chop and swap job straight away

Oh and Script Writer appears to work with CS5 on the Mac.....

I could do with someone letting me know if it works on the PC under each OS.

Greylensman - I have had a go at your image, if you don't like it I will delete. I have been going though the tutorials here

greylensmanboy.jpg

better but still obvious it is a cut out, the giveaway is the sharp edges, particularly around the hair

Ah, image>rotate>arbitrary was too hard for you? :D

A one click solution is a good idea, I suppose I could run an action though to do the same thing?

Yep, and crop with grid was easier than that :) but why should cheap as chips Elements 6 get a feature than mega pricey CS4 doesn't???

As for an action, each rotation would be a different angle, how would you handle that without manual intervention? You'd need to calculate the correction to set the ruler to the level, and have it determine whether it's straightening to horizontal or vertical....Then the action would need to crop as tight as possible to the straightened image to get the same effect...

that's what Bridge is for and good at it as well

the rule tool is in CS4 you just draw a line on the point you wish straight and then image/rotate/arbitrary you will have the angle already click on 'ok' its done

You are right Chaz but CS5 auto crops it too, that is the difference.

Is this better ? (seeing as no one commented on my dogs on the previous page which I spent a lot longer working on :) )

greylensmanboy2.jpg

Much better, now you only have to sort out the very flat lighting!
