Have you set the Image-Mode on your black and white one to Grayscale? that would cause everything you copied to it to do as you are saying.

What Paul has said sounds about right. You need to keep the B&W image as an RGB image rather than a greyscale one

You have a several options. From the main menu select Image and choose either B&W, Chanel Mixer or Hue and Saturation from the Adjustments menu.

The first two allow you to adjust how the B&W image is to be processed. If in doubt leave as it is. With Chanel mixer. just tick the "Monochrome"box. bottom right. With Hue and Saturation, just slide the Saturation slider down to minimum. All three options will keep th image as an RGB one not a greysacale

Or convert the image using the black and white layer tool thingy.
Speaking of layers the colour version you are copying over, is it positioned above or below the layer turning your other image B&W? If it's below that's your problem.

seems like a lot of trouble to go to..
As I understand it the 2 images are the same?

if so, duplicate the layer <ctrl J>
add a black and white adjustment layer and clip it to the new (top) layer
mask out where you want the colour to show through with your selection..

bingo gringo..

Try adobe.tv for some of the tutorials there.

In addition to adobe tv, on the book front you could try Martin Evening and Scott Kelby. Both have their merits.

There is always youtube as well but there is a lot of dross there although it's usually obvious which ones are inept.
