CS5 - copy selection to new layer after feathering

Does anybody know why this is happening, sometimes when I make a selection then apply a feather to it and then press ctrl+J to copy it to a new layer nothing happens but the annoying bonging noise, if I right-click inside the selection though and click on layer via copy it works fine.

It doesn't matter if I use the marquee or lasso tool and it only happens when I apply a feather.

I could not reproduce the error you are mentioning here. I tried ctrl+J with a selection - once without feathering and once after feathering. It worked both times. (I repeated the steps with other options like right-click and "layer via copy" / New blank layer and ctrl+c & ctrl + V...) - it works everytime.
I have CS5 on Windows Vista

Try applying the feather before making the selection.
