.. Does the RAW editor on CS4 edit the actual RAW file? I currently have CS3 and have been told that the RAW editor saves over the top of the RAW file where as LightRoom doesn't.

Is this true? If so does this still happen with CS4?
 
So it doesnt affect the RAW file what so ever in either CS3 or CS4??
 
Nope, not at all. As an experiment, try wildly editing a raw file in ACR. Now go to the folder where it's stored and find the .xmp file with the same name. Bin it, open the raw file in ACR and it will be exactly as it was before you edited it :thumbs:

When you edit a RAW, all the info relating to the edit is stored in the .xmp file so if that is lost, all the edit info is lost with it.

no mate all it does is apply the changes to the xmp file. if you dont like the changes just hit the default button in adobe camera raw and set the drop down for white balance to AS SHOT :).

Why do RAW files opened in CS4 look different to RAW files opened in Canon DPP (no settings changed in either, images saved straight to jpg)? The DPP ones look a bit over saturated and unnatural.
 
Ah. Just installed ACR 5.3 in CS$ and that appears to have the same camera styles that DPP has to choose from. Not sure why I'd choose anything but Camera Standard tbh - surely that's going to be the one closest to real life?
 
Both CS4 and Lightroom 2.2 will check for camera styles and convert the image using Adobe's interpretation of that style.

A number of comments were posted on the Adobe site and in other forums that DPP gave better looking results than LR did. But to be honest you could tweak the images to get the same result and save it as a preset .

I'm with Trixter Camera Standard is fine by me, but now you have a choice.
