I've obviously done something stupid within CS3 and have somehow managed to turn the Gradient filter from the default of dark to light into a light to almost white if that makes sense. In addition the colur option within the gradient editor has become greyed out and I can't alter it.

The upshot of this being my very pale blue skies now get made even paler rather than a nice deeper blue.

Any ideas of what I've done and how to fix it would be gratefully received.

First off the gradient tool gets it's colours from the colour boxes on the left toolbar, hit D on the keyboard and they should reset back to black and white, these need to be the colours you want in your gradient as a starting point.
Next point are you using any layers or layer masks? also check your on a colour image (RGB) if your on greyscale or something else this can cause problems.

You might also want to check that you've got the grad set to "colour to transparent". It's the second option in the grad tool box. It displays as a Grey to checkerboard icon.

:thankyou: Thanks very much for the help from both of you, hitting D did the trick.
