Hello,

1st post, here goes.:bonk:
New to photography and the PP that goes on afterwards.
Will Photoshop CS2 be a good start for a beginer or is it worth going for a newer version (CS3 or 4)?

I use cs2 and find it suitable for all that i do on it, I can only use the basics on it at the moment but learning all the time.

ps.. I only use cs2 as I got a copy free.

Hi and Welcome:)

It also depends on your camera. Newer models won't work with adobe camera raw on older versions of Photoshop and you will then need to convert first.

Newbie, so I went the Sony A350 route.
Great camera for what I need at the moment but already looking at upgrading.

I can see this photography lark being a long costly journey:shake:

I use cs3 extended.
If you get CS4 you wont need the extended version.
Cs2 is short of a few of the more recent and useful controls.

CS3 Extended here, too. with Noise Ninja and Vivenza plug ins.... (still dont know how to use half of the functions, but when i have a spare hour, i keep dabbling !! :) ) oh and i use bridge for RAW, which does me for the time being.

To be honest you'll probably find CS2 fine for now.

For most people it had more bells and whistles than they needed

I'm still suing CS3... no need to upgrade unless you got the money

Been using Cs2 since it came out And its still plenty beyond my capabilities.
It will be a long time before you need to upgrade that software. if you are looking for newer software, Lightroom would be a good choice then use CS2 for anything Lightroom cannot do.

Agreed - I use CS3, but predominantly use Lightroom 2. I don't feel the need to upgrade, because I can do everything I need to in those programs, and I certainly don't need a new version of Photoshop. CS2 was absolutely fine for me - I never "outgrew" it. I'd stick with it for a while, see how you get on, and if you find that the software is ultimately holding you back, then change it.

That's one of my general rules of all camera kit. There's always something newer on the horizon.

The short answer is no, the reason is a new version CS5 isn't that far away, upgrade now and in a few months there will be a newer better (hopefully) version around.
CS2 is a very powerfull tool, it's do pretty much anything to an image, there are pros managing quite happily on older versions around.

I have CS2 at home and CS3 at school, and there's very little difference between the two for photography, tbh i prefer CS2 it seems a little easier

Cs2 may not support your Canon 5D mk11, so make sure you get the necessary plugins. I have cs2 and cs3. Not a lot of difference. Both superb tools that we'll never completely master.

Cs2 won't support the 5d2, you'll have to use the dng converter (free from adobe)

I would of thought that as its all new to you photoshop elements (sorry I can't remember the current version) would of been a better and cheaper choice. At the risk of getting shot down you will probably find elements meets all your needs.
