Subject: D80 or D200.

All I can think of at the moment is which one to buy. Sitting here at my desk twiddling my thumbs. I have weighed up the pros and cons numerous times but cant decide.

I have asked myself, what do I want from a camera?

  • Vertical grip (Must have)
  • 10+ Megapixels
  • 11 point autofocus
  • A decent viewfinder
  • A fast frame count, preferably 5FPS.
  • Not fussed about weather sealing as my lenses dont have this
  • Dont really want scene modes on the dial as I will never ever use them

What will it be used for?

  • Will be used for Aviation photography
  • Portraiture
  • Landscape

Naturally I should be leaning toward the D80 as it will cover the majorty of my requirments but something inside is whispoering D200, D200. Do I really need it?

Need to decide by 14th as my dad is flying over to hong kong so he will be picking it up for me.

Appreciate your input.

King.

personally, i'd buy the d80 and get a decent mid zoom to replace your 18-70, like the 17-55. the things you state you want the d80 has, except it is 3fps not 5fps, but saying that i dont honestly believe you need 5fps for aviation photography, and i think 3 might be adequate!

what exactly is the price difference between the d80 and the d200 from hong kong?

From my own experience, if you go for the D80 (in my case the 30D), you will still hear D200 (in my case 5D) whispered in your ear even after purchase.

I've ended up with both which I don't regret at all. So, my advise, if you have the readies cut out the middle-man and go for the 200.

just my 2p

Jon

Yup, you'll always regret not going for the better camera. If you can afford it then buy the D200, if you cannot afford it Buy the D80 and shut your mind to the ceaseless nagging. :)

Can't argue with this logic.

Go for the cheaper option, and you will always regret it.

I've done this in the past, and ended up selling nearly new gear for a lot less than I paid, and then having to find more for the bigger purchase.

There will always be that gremlin in your head whispering 'if only':bang:

on reading those two posts, i actually disagree with what i said. i was opting for the 5D over the 1dmk2n because of the price, but i went through with my original dream of the 1d, and came out best. ignore my first post and go with the d200!

and now i think about it, i did the same thing with buying the 50mm f1.8 because the f1.4 was alot more expensive, then ended up buying the f1.4 because it was originally what i wanted and it was just so much better

Buy a Canon...

Seriously I have learnt in the past that always get the best you can afford, Same with computers, I remember my 1st computer coming with a 14" Monitor (my choice BTW) and when it came it only took a day to realise the bigger version was the better option although it was more money.:geek:

The same goes for cameras, Go for the D200 mate, You will always regret not buying it afterwards..;)

Thats a D200 you described there - Get it! Had a similar dilema to either buy a new D80 or a mint D200 & went for the latter & glad I did - If you've picked up these two Nikons you'll "feel" the difference in an instant - JMO of course ... Paul

Have you played with the D200? Just on the feel and handling of the camera alone I'd go D200. If I had the money I would buy one right now. No reservations.
Not that the D80 feels bad, oh on the contrary, but the D200 is better imo. That would be my decision.

If you can afford the D200, get the D200 - better to have the features now when you can use/learn to use them, than to discover the benefit that the next model would give you. Its a form of future proofing, but also the D200 will be a better built camera that can take more punishment and will be a more professional product.

Im in a similar position myself in that I want a 5D, but keep getting tempted by the 30D - I think Im going to try and hold out for the 5D (or maybe its successor):D.

Go into a shop and pick them both up, buy the most comfortable one... Then if you get the D80 splash the extra on some more glass... :D

have played with them both. both were comfortable but preffered the chunky D200. 95% going to go for it i think. It will mate well with my upcoming 30mm f1.4 and 100-300 f4 me thinks.

Will let you know when my father returns with the box.

On another note,do you think its worthwhile selling the D50 or using it as a back up/second lens option?

King.

I sold my D70, in your position I'd probably sell the D50. I only need one camera, and I can put the extra cash towards more glass. And glass is the most important thing remember ;)

I started off with the D50 and upgraded to the D200 a few months back. Ive still got the D50 mainly as a backup body but also for the times i dont need the weight of the D200 and all the other bits i have for it :D

I didn't hesitate to hang on to my old camera when buying my 30D. Only you know, however, how gutted you'd be to be without a camera for a couple of weeks if your new one needed a repair........

For my two pennorth I would say the D80 is too close to your current camera KB ... if you're gonna upgrade then do it properly ... its gotta be the D200 m8 ... :D

No question ... ;)

:p

I went from a D50 to the D80 back in November (and just got the grip from Kerso). I just couldn't justify the extra £400 difference in the price of the body.....

If you can afford it, get the D200 though. I love the feel of my D80 now though. Was playing with my brothers D50 last week, and was surprised at how cheap and plastiky it felt :D
