Just received the following message on my Flickr page

Hi xxiiashiixx,
You take amazing photos and I'd love to add some of your Flickr photos to CrowdMedia's collection in a profile made just for you, with your copyright and your attribution.
CrowdMedia is a new place where thousands of photographers like you reveal how they see our world and get their photos discovered by publishers and photo lovers.
You automatically get a link back to your Flickr with your CrowdMedia profile. And you can add a link to your personal website as well in your CrowdMedia profile.
It is always free for photographers.
If you want to try, all you have to do is answer Yes and I will send your photos’ link in crowdmedia.co when it is done.
Thanks,
Martin

I'm only an enthusiastic amateur and having never been asked permission before for any of my images i'm at odds really about what to do next and would like to ask TP'ers opinion...

It's not some kind of scam is it?

Sounds kind of ambiguous to me, are they asking you to add your pictures to their flickr group, or asking you to give them to their organisation for free for them to sell?

I could be wrong, and I can't be arsed checking, but they may be in breach of the flickr usage terms if they are pimping your photos to buyers.

Run away. and keep running.... or buy a big barge pole....

Looks like they're a photo agency, their terms are here.

They asign there licence to your work as soon as you uplaod it.. if they sell it they give you HALF and by paypal and you pay the paypal fees..

basically there trying to get content off gullible poeple.. then sell it and keep half the money.. and they do what?

Appreciate the comments guys, thanks !!!

Hypothetically, as someone who's a complete amateur and makes £0 from my images anyway, would it really be such a bad thing to use a platform such as CrowdMedia.

.depends how gullible you are... yes 50% of somehting is more than 100% of nothing... however.. are you in photogprahy to make money? if yes then why would you give half away?.. if no then you would just be being used....

That's how most agencies work. Getting half is not unusual, and is more than you would get from Getty, and the same you would get from Alamy. iStock would only net you 15% of the sale price.

It appears to be just a picture agency, and certainly nothing to run away, and keep running from :) If you're currently doing nothing to sell your images, I see no big deal. I couldn't see anything that says you don't retain copyright and exclusivity, so it's not a rights grab. It just seems to be an ordinary stock agency.

My photography is 100% a hobby for me so although I understand perfectly what you're saying I haven't really got anything to lose I suppose as I still keep hold of my copyright...

hold your copyright.. doesnt mean much when you hand over so much control by agreeing to there licence as soon as you upload..

but hey.. doesnt seem to matter about advice against it. you already decided....... hard to understand why you even asked :)

i would and i would advise anyone else.. .. thats all it is.. my opinion.. i wasnt ordering him.. and anyway it would seem he already made up his mind hes just looking for a nudge or someone to tell him its OK :)

Hi Ashley, I am the co-founder of CrowdMedia. I'm the one who sent you this message in Flickr (and to Dan as well).

I thought I would reply to give everyone a chance to ask me any question they might have regarding what we are doing at CrowdMedia. I am very open about everything we do, so any question is good.

In a couple of words, we aim to help photographers get more visibility by being published and being rewarded for their photos.
On the other hand, we also help editorial publishers get the photos they want, when they need them. Publishers pay us for this, and we share half with photographers.
Most photographers I have spoken to feel it is fair.

Photographers keep the rights to their photos, we never own them. They don't have to give exclusivity. They can remove their photos or even erase the whole profile in 2 clicks anytime they want. I want us to be photographer-friendly. Otherwise, there is no point to what we are doing...

We opened our doors to photographers in January and we have more than 6000 photographers in our community at this point. It is a very encouraging beginning :)

Any question or comment for me?

Welcome Martin. Can i ask that you take a few moments to read the rules on advertising please. We also offer some very competitive advertising packages if you're interested.

Interesting that you have 6000 photographers signed up though personally I'd be more interested roughly how many paid usages you supply each month and how competitive your rates are, as obviously it's fairly easy to get published if your willing to give your work away or as good as give it away
