Hello,

was planning oon going to Crosby to photo the Antony Gormley statues and was wondering if anyone had been and what they found would be the best times to visit?

thanks

Main bit of advice, check the tide timetables! You don't want to get there when they're underwater! Although I think I remember hearing it is only certain tides that full submerse them...

Since it's the school holidays either a sunrise or sunset visit would be the most sensible, Formby beach can get quite busy during daylight hours at this time of year..

I've never been to the statues, but for beaches in general I find it's best to go as the tide goes out. Least chance of getting stranded, plus the newly uncovered sand has no foot prints in it.

all of the statues are generally covered at high tide.

The statues and sunset has been done to death - myself included, and sunset is still pretty late. So maybe consider some wilder weather, stormy with waves crashing, or maybe windy when the tide is out and you have drifting sand?

and be careful where you park your car and what you leave in it, i've been told that cars are being broken into as thieves know there's expensive gear left in the cars so only take what you can carry with you.

there's quicksand if you go out to far so bear that in mind too

I'm not far from here and keep meaning to get out to them, will try and get there sometime after the summer. Hopefully.

...and don't forget your wellington boots.

I regularly run along the sea wall and /or beach, and I have never had a problem with theft from cars, and have never seen evidence of broken windows etc. However a cautious approach would still be sensible, as would be the case everywhere else in the UK.

The beach is safe if you are sensible, walk on ridges and you will be walking on sand. Quick sand is not really an issue unless you are being caught by the tide. The little drainage creeks can be full of silty clay and remain sof and wet, so don't expect to get out of them cleanly unless you take a run and a jump.

The main risk is the incoming tide, its a flat beach, the area has one of the highest tidal ranges in the country, meaning the beach floods very quickly. Dont think you can out run it. You will need to be really quick, I suspect few of us are that quick, especially if you being weighted down with photography equipment.
