hi all

right i have two questions for you and hope you can answer as i am a bit thick ..

1. i have noticed that when some of you have taken pictures you show the picture in colour and then in black and white ,wot i am after noing is how is this done

i use coral paint shop pro


2 i have noticed when you put pictures up that people post replies like
bit less colour /more colour to much cropping this that and the other

just wanted to no if any one canhelp me out on this wot might seem very simple solution

1 - Although some cameras do have a B&W option at the taking stage, most B&W images seen here are a conversion of a colour one - this is done one your pc/mac with editing software, such as your PSPro with desaturate, channels, specific B&W options, etc. (I'm a CS user so you need to wait for a PSPro user to come along to answer that fully)

2 - this can be more tricky as how my monitor shows colour won't be the same as yours, so even though we're looking at the same image, it's unlikely we're seeing the same colours in that image

That said, 'more colour' usually means saturate the colours a bit more, giving them more oomph (technical photographer's term :lol:); more cropping means get your 'scissors' out and cut the image down a bit more, too much cropping means you've already cut too much off it

Cropping can either be done in-camera by zooming in or simply walking forwards, or in post-production on your computer by using a 'crop' tool (digital scissors) and simply throwing some pixels away. Wherever possible, crop in-camera as the image quality will then be higher as it has more pixels in it

It's all about adjusting levels / saturation for the colours and black and white settings. Sorry, don't know what they're called on PSP :(

Cropping is where you "cut" down the image using the crop tool in the software, usually to remove uninteresting details around the edges etc.

Hi Tricky, there's a few ways to do it. If you have a colour photo that you want to turn into black and white - click on Effects then Photo Effects and this gives you the option to turn the picture into BW, infra red etc. Or you can click on Adjust then Hue and Saturation - Hue/Saturation/Lightness then take the saturation slider all the way to the bottom and this will take all the colour out or alternatively if the photo is colour sliding this up will add more colour.

Right. For me, I find the way to get the best B+W results on PSPro is to use the channel mixer. You can do this by clicking

Adjust -> Colour Balance -> Channel Mixer.

Then click in the little "monochrome" box. I then tend to play around with the Brightness and contrast. And then focus on shadows/midtones/highlights before dodging and burning where necessary.

To crop (cut a photo up) just click on the crop button and draw the square where you feel it would be best suited.
