You can either crop to what is best for the image, or if you are printing out at a given size, 6x4, 7x5,10x8 or whatever. :shrug:
Most of my pics are for me, and occasional showing on the internet, so I crop to the image. If I'm printing, I'll crop to the paper size, as I did recently for 7x5 and A4. There are times when an image may not crop well at a preset size.
I printed out 150 7x5 pics (for free) a few months ago, and when preparing the the images, there was one or two which didn't look good at 7x5, even though they were very nice pics. (imho

If you have a print size that you always plan to use, then with experience you will hopefully pre visualise the image and shoot accordingly to minimise cropping later on.
Any image editing program should allow you to crop in whatever way you want. :shrug:
