Crop factor...

'Lo everyone,
Today in college I heard one of my teachers talking about something called "crop factor" on digital cameras, I didn't get to ask her really what this meant in detail, I was just wondering if anyone here could shed some light on it!

Please someone correct me if i'm wrong. (I'm trying to get my head round this too)
I have a D40x which has a crop factor of 1.5x

My 18mm - 55mm lens is the equivilent to using a 27mm - 82.5mm lens on a 35mm film SLR.
18mm x 1.5 = 27mm
55mm x 1.5 = 82.5mm

I did a direct comparison a while ago between a full frame sensor on my 5D and the 1.6 crop sensor on my 30D

Just dont make the mistake of thinking it gives you more magnification as it doesnt ! it only narrows the field of view.
