$18k kit destroyed?, yeah right. Nikon D4, D3 + Lenses all waterproof (at least enough to survive 5 seconds underwater), of his kit list only the iPad and iPhone were not waterproof.

I might be wrong but I doubt any claim to be waterproof, they are weather sealed yes but there's a big difference between being out in the rain and camera being completely submerged for however long...so it's more than possible its damaged...not to mention how much could he trust the cameras even if they were currently working I know I wouldn't want to trust them going forwards as a working pro...thankfully I'm not a working pro

You have no clue. Between the time that the cameras were submerged, taken out of the water, batteries removed and dried off, any amount of damage could have occurred. Water damage is sporadic. Weather seals might hold up perfectly well on one camera and survive a 5 second plunge into sea water. Another camera of the same weather sealed standard may fail after being exposed to a few minutes of rain. It's unpredictable.

why does the thread title read like something youd get on a phishing scam email?

I believe the OP has simply copied the bulk of the linked article URL to use as the title

It seems Nikons are made of sterner stuff - this from the same site as the destroyed story - http://petapixel.com/2013/05/23/the...-getting-wet-muddy-frozen-dropped-and-burned/ - D3 gets soaked, frozen in ice, burned and more and still works. The tog in the op is extracting the micheal claiming that a short dunking destroyed all that kit.

What's your point? The same goes for the 7D... The Digital Rev durability test freezes, burns, shoots and runs over a 7D with a truck - it still takes pictures at the end of the test. The unfortunate bloke who took his 7D for a wildlife expedition wasn't so lucky.

I thought it was pretty clear, I believe the tog in question is using the incident to get his gear upgraded for free.

That's some pretty top of the line gear he'd want replacing - what's the point? I for one wouldn't be arsed having to deal with the insurance companies - waiting months to finalise the claim. F*ck that.

The D4 isn't his it belongs to the publication he was working for and I'm not sure but the iPad and phone also belong to them. He's probably covered by their insurance and with the two idiots having been arrested he won't have much difficulty.

Upgraded to what exactly? There is nowhere to go (at least staying in the Nikon line). Wouldn't you say that at least looking at his gear would be more reasonable then jumping to that conclusion?

I did look at his gear, the D3 and a lens is his, the D4, it's lens and the iPad belong to his employer both sets of camera gear are more than capable of handling a couple of seconds in water without damage. Also it's actually not going to be down to insurance, from what I read the parents of the perpetrators are going to have to stump up.

I know its not going to be down to insurance. By look at his gear I meant inspect the actual cameras he was holding. Its difficult to understand how anyone can give any idea of damage without doing that. If memory serves me didn't a member here destroy a D3 a couple of years ago with a quick dunk in a stream?. I think you're being very hasty to condemn

Well of course the parents will have to stump up, they probably will not be paying the photographer or his employer directly though, I'm confident they will be making a claim on their respective insurance, the insurance company will likely be the ones pursuing the parents for recovery of dues...

You keep on going on about how these camera can stand immersion but the demonstration you gave did they have the battery's in and the cameras powered up...I doubt it..

Theyre weather sealed not waterproof, would you let me dunk it in water if was your gear, get a brain for christs sake.
