Criticism Please! PP Learner!!

I'd say your on the right lines, its all personal taste though of course, for me your photo's are lacking a little contrast...the last one you posted was a lot better in this regard.

you've also not managed to expose the sky properly, it looks as though your camera may be struggling withe the dynamic range in the scene,

The trick is to try and start with a good an image as possible and keep PP to a minimum...you've definitely got of to a great start though :)

My favourite in this set is 1, somewhere between the two shown with the blacks of Shaun's edit, but without being cropped although I would probably clone out the large tree trunk

2 and 3 are a bit bland for my liking - no real point of interest but 4 has real potential, looks like it is listing to the left a tad.

Why not join in the "How would you edit this photo game" or the "PP" thread, both of these can expand your PS skills

Shaun?

I've had a fiddle and cannot get anything like what you've managed!! I've tried with contrast and curves but it just won't work.

Do you mind telling me how you got that effect please?

(Or if anyone else knows ...!)

Np's

Please bear in mind I like my images a bit on the heavy side for post, I really like

Anyway...
1) added contrast, there are loads of ways to do this, but for this pic I used a b&w layer set to soft light blend mode and reduced opacity.

A good trick to do this is to use the channel mixer adjustment ( remember to tick monochrome) and you can play with the red, blue and green channels separately. You could use the b & w adjustment for even finer control.

2) light colour was a bit bland for me so warmed up the whites, again loads of ways to do this, I used a curve and added a slight cross process in the blue channel and lowered opacity, ( If that sounds a bit complicated, you can go to the selective colour choose the whites and take out blue )

3) adjusted levels, small adjustment, to add a bit more depth

4) vignette, (actually I used a low opacity brush on a layer mask of 1) to lighten the centre a bit)

5) added a bit more light to he middle of the pic on a whim, big white soft brush on its own layer, set to soft light blend mode and added under the cross process curve.

If I get time I'll post up an example of a cross process in curves, but basically select blue channel in curves and drag the bottom slider up, and the top slider down...like this

Hope this helps :)
