Yes
Got a call from my bank today saying they had detected 2 suspicious tractions on my CC.
Mobile phone top up and a purchase from a computer company.
Total amount was £60 and were fraudulent.

Possibly someone I have dealt with has noted the card details.

CC company will refund the money straight away and they have cancelled the card and are sending out a new one.

Bank said that these crooks often start by taking a small amount and if it is not noticed then take a large one.

Hard to know how to prevent that.
All my purchases are over the internet and I only deal with well known reputable companies.

Unlucky that you have been targeted, but at least the credit card company was on the ball and quickly realised what was happening.

It happened to me twice. I have to admit the CC company was excellent and I didn't lose anything (unusual when you can actually praise a bank).

Funny thing is though... it's only happened since chip and pin came in. I never had any trouble in the years that you had to sign. Maybe it's not as good as they said it was?

had this happen to me recently but out of my current account accound

They said they have software that identifies odd purchases.

I understand chip and pin is OK, but it has resulted in more fraud over the phone and from countries that don't have C&P

That's a good reason to buy with a CC. You are not out of pocket.

Sadly, credit card fraud is all to common these days.
My Mrs has had it happen on two different credit cards in the last twelve months and both times the credit card companies were on the ball so she lost nothing.
A few years ago someone tried using one of mine to pay £12000 for a car online and again, the credit card company were on the ball.

We pay for most things via credit card because of the protection.
We never let the cards out of our sight when making a payment and dodgy resturant staff are a major culprit for stealing card details.
Even with the portable card readers they've tried to walk away with my card to do the transaction and I always insist they do it in front of me.
I've had a moan at a few resturant managers when their staff have tried this.

I wonder how safe this new "contactless" method of payment will be? I'm assuming they must have some really clever technology built into it, otherwise all a scammer need do is "grab" the signal from the card and they have all they need to go a spending spree....

It wasn't too long ago where there were several cases of credit cards being cloned with the chip-and-pin terminals, and the majority were at petrol stations. But I think the important point, as mentioned by Hashcake, is to keep the card in full view. It might not necessarily eliminate fraud, but it may help.

Sounds like Capital One system. They check for 'odd purchases'. I was hit with it once when I was in Spain, came back and it was Orange mobile top-ups.

Now I am every so suspcious when someone calls. Not too long ago, CapOne called me and wanted me to do some security checks. I kindly denied and said I would call her back on the number I had. She said not a problem, gave me her name etc..
It was CapOne calling and I told them what they needed. Then they told me why they called etc..

Cant be too carefull now.

I just love that kind of call, I guess I must have a perverse sense of humour. But I always figure they already know the info they're asking you, so why should I confirm it.
