Mrs Galaxy received a call yesterday from her credit card supplier, M&S.
They asked if she had used her card since Saturday, she said she had not, they then asked her if she had used it to buy 2 flights on KLM airline for £2600, to this she said she definitely had not.
I was overhearing her side of the conversation and was concerned that the actual call was a scam, she then was reassured the call was genuine by the caller giving her the first and last letter of her password which was correct.
She has no Idea of how her details have been obtained, she has not bought anything from any new suppliers on the net.
I can only guess that one of the sites she has bought from has had their security hacked. She has never verbally given her details to anyone. The airline tickets purchase was preceded by an £8 purchase from London Transport.
She has now cut her credit card upand they are sending her a new one, and from now on she is not going to use it for online purchases and only use her card if she has not got the cash handy.

Petrol stations are currently a big problem for stealing card details. I know a few people that were caught out by the same guy at the same station.

Yeah, there are a couple in Bradford that are quite well known for skimming card details.

Had mine compromised a couple of times, once for £3k of airline tickets and then for £1k of gambling at an online casino. Still dont really know how they got hold of my details but im pretty sure it was some dodgy petrol station when i was out and about with work :(

They had the security code from the back for the fraudulent transactions.

Although there is nothing to stop an attendant reading the code on the back come to think of it

Happened to me a few weeks back, luckily it was my debit card and I check my bank account online daily. In my case it was for adverts in Auto Trader, a relatively small sum in total £174 but that could have mounted fast if I wasn't careful about checking.

In my case I also have a sneaking suspicion I know where my details were compromised (a shop assistant having 'trouble' with the card reader took my card out and wiped it on his jacket, a classic skimming move), no proof though so all I can do is be more careful when I use it.

Sorry to hear that Galaxy :( It happened to me a while ago and although you get the money back it's still a pain in the bum :shake: I've no idea how mine got skimmed but when it happened to my mother the police told her it was almost certainly her local petrol station - a chap who worked there had been recently arrested :nono:

Someone spent a week flying around Europe using my Amex card last year. The passenger's surname name implied that he was very unlikely to look like a "Bob" but he clearly made it work for him.

The strange thing was that Amex initially wanted me to prove that I hadn't given him permission to use it. After a while two photocopies of signed slips were sent to me from Amex. The card number was mine but the name on the card was totally different. The card hadn't been brought up to chip and pin compliance then so a point of sale signature was always needed unless it was for an online/telephone sale.

Beware of giving details to a dark skinned Bob who doesn't eat pork!

Bob

Sorry to hear that. A few garages here were skimming cards not too long ago - there was abig article in the local papers. This happened to one of my colleagues just before Xmas - the thieving b******* wiped out her debit card account so she had to borrow money to buy her kids presents.

I got rid of my Credit card when someone skimmed it and spent 7K on it and my bank didnt bother telling me, they called me up a few days later to ask if i had bought something from Tesco, as I usually shop at Sainsburys and it came up as unusual on thier system.

Ooooh, this thread has really opened my eyes up.
I used to think that you couldn't really get your details stolen unless someone takes your credit card or you enter them into an unsecure/fake website.
How naive of me.
Looks like I'll be paying with cash from now on!

A local branch of a large bank here in Toronto is currently under investigation due to some unscrupulous tenders. Some customers were having money taken from their bank accounts and were asked to bring their debit/credit card in to the branch to be replaced. When they handed the card over to some members of staff instead of cutting the card up they were keeping it for themselves and taking money out before deactiviating the card and activating the new one.

You can undnerstand it happening in petrol stations etc etc but in your own bank :nono: :nono:.

I now see why the father-in-law always uses cash!!
